Botanical Gardens, Edinburgh... love orchids

This photo was taken at the Bellagio Hotel / Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. It seems as though there is something different in the Botanical Gardens almost every other week or so.

Here's a closer view. This is was taken a hour or two after it had rained. I love the spiraling leaves.

The collections are focused on plants from Mediterranean regions around the world, this is a vegetation linked to the Mediterranean climate that is characterized by a long dry summer, mild winters and rains in spring and autumn. This climate is only found on 5% of the earth's surface, but in 5 regions of the world in which the plants had a specific adaptive evolution that nevertheless gives quite similar landscapes, for which reason the plants are distributed grouped, according to the five Mediterranean regions of the world.

The paths allow us to access from zone to zone, starting with the Canary Islands located at the entrance and going up to the western Mediterranean recognizable by the botanical institute, which stands out.

From the Northern Hemisphere, the area with the greatest representation is the Mediterranean Basin. Following the visit path leads to the coast of California with a Mediterranean climate.

Then there are the Mediterranean areas of the Southern Hemisphere where you visit the Mediterranean region of Chile, southern Africa, and the two Mediterranean regions of southern Australia (SE and S).

Toothworts

Molars, purpled from chewing blood,

Mouth the air. Like a fractured jaw,

It atrophies in brown senescence,

Shrivelled in mortal sequence.

Then come canines, each slick blade

A channelled fang on forest floor.

Curtailed questions, curt statements:

Death in life, blanched and bland.

Notes: Toothworts, pictured here on the grounds of a Roman villa, parasitize the roots of trees, and contain no chlorophyll. The doctrine of signatures dictated that these corpse-like flowers were good for toothache, because they look so much like molars. As Grigson, The Englishman’s Flora points out, “the corolla rapidly dries and shrivels to a dark brown, so that on a spike at one time fresh flowers on top are succeeded by shrivelled flowers below, adding to the plant’s deathliness.” Moreover, the capsules “are ivory-white and shiny and channelled like small fangs.” Fortunately for the plants they parasitize, but not for enthusiasts, these botanical vampires are comparatively rare. If anyone can ID, I'll be grateful. The label I took note of is incorrect. It is planted in a "waterwise" display area, so presumably it requires only seasonal water and can manage dry spells.
