VIEW LARGE -- Bosque Del Apache NWR is such a magical place! It should be included in every birder's and bird photographer's 'must do' list of places to visit and experience. I promise you would never regret it!!!
The abundance of birds and other wildlife is awe inspiring. It truly takes several days of driving the refuge roads and walking the trails and lake shores to just begin to capture a glimpse of the grandeur of this mesmerizing place!!!!
Landing gear down, flaps down. Taken in pretty strong backlight, as the light was coming from the rear-left side. The camera held the shadows very well this time, which doesn't always happen - perhaps because of the darker background.
Comments, criticisms, invites and faves are always welcomed and valued. Thanks for viewing.

We all knew them when we were in school, they hung out in a group of their own, with their long legs and their perfect hair...

We had no plans for Thanksgiving except to stay home in the unseasonable cold so Mrs M took a few personal days off. Armed with reservations via Hotwire (you never know what you're going to get) and a rental car, we set out for a new 6 days, 7 nights adventure.
First stop: Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. It's an old favorite, especially when the cranes and snow geese are in town. This stop didn't disappoint, there were plenty of birds, and we hit it at the end of the Festival of the Cranes, which we usually seem to miss.
I imagine a time when the earth was unfettered by the hand of mankind. I imagine a time when the haunting echo of the sandhill crane filled the air in glorious cacophony. The sun is setting on ancient sands 2 million years ago. The line between human and non-human species is only now being etched in the sands of evolutionary time. For a moment, I stand with the glow of the setting sun before me, and sandhill cranes are performing the rituals that are their ancient rite. The bustle of human existence has not even crossed the horizon. The earth is simple, savage, an sublime. Every woman, man, and child should cross that threshold at least once. I prefer to cross it as often as possible. Step into the great outdoors and our National Parks and imagine....

Northern Pintail (Anas acuta) male. Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. Socorro Co., New Mexico.
Visiting Bosque del Apache again, we hiked up the Canyon Trail looking for signs of the roadrunner. No roadrunners, so we had to have another look at the little arch in the canyon. And another photo. Turns out the arch is just big enough to fit a magpie.
(reason #4445 why it takes us all day to get anywhere!)

This guy is the best Mule Deer Buck I have ever seen. He was with another smaller buck see below. The last photo is the smaller buck by himself. He looks pretty good when he's not running with the big guy.
Taken at Bosque del Apache NWR in New Mexico.

Perhaps because of their large numbers, or perhaps simply because of their overall visibility, coots just don't seem to get a lot of attention. They are members of the rail family, but unlike most rails, that tend to be timid and hard to see, coots seem relatively oblivious to humans. They are frequently the closest birds on the water, and go about their business unfettered by human proximity. Unlike ducks, they are fast on the ground, and although they have short weak wings, they are also fast in the air. Coots are omnivorous and will eat just about anything they find in the marshes, from plants to small insects, animals, and eggs. Next time you're at the refuge, give a hoot for a coot! #ILoveNature #ILoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #NewMexico #Nature in #America #USA #Coots #Rails #Birds #Canon #Bringit #DrDADBooks. #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday
