I really surprise myself once in a while with what goes through my head. I went for drive early yesterday morning. I ended up in Ponder, Texas (not that big of deal, Ponder is like 5 miles from our house). I was stuck on the wrong side of the tracks as two of those damn BNSF trains were making a meet. As I was starting to cuss the day I was born, I noticed this little scene in the picture attached. Of course I had to wait until the two trains went on their merry way to hit the button.
I believe it was the spring of 1983, I do know that it was at the end of my 7th grade year. Homer and Bootstrap, along with Papa Jim and Grammy and my brother and I made a trip to Kansas and Missouri to visit family. Dad would drive the entire two weeks, except for a small amount of time in Oklahoma. Papa Jim drove from the east side of Oklahoma City to the west side of Oklahoma City on our way home. Due to an overwhelming vote by the entire family, dad took back over driving. Just the six of us in a 1978 customized Dodge van. Dad and Papa in the front with seat belts. Mom and Grammy in the bucket seats with no seat belts. Mike and I sat in the back in those old Aluminum lawn chairs with zero thought of seat belts. For safety reasons, both lawn chairs were bought specifically for this trip, they were lower to the ground than normal chairs. This was just in case there was an accident, as we flew through the air, we would not be that high off the ground before we impacted what ever was in front of us. Needless to say in order to see anything, we had to sit facing the back windows. So if we did impact anything we would hit the back of our heads which was the same direction the USS Slam Van was traveling. For two weeks Mike and I saw the country from the from the opposite direction we were traveling.
Imagine my surprise when on day 3 we arrived in Larned, KS. This is where my Papa Jim was born and raised. Uncle Chuck and Aunt Mina still lived there. This was the first time I remember being out of California or Oregon. I remember being excited about the new adventures that were just outside. As I walked outside I noticed a basketball hoop, two feet shorter than it should have been, a garage and railroad tracks with some ballast cars tied down in the siding. I thought great, I can at least shoot baskets while the old people visit. There was a problem, no basketball. I then resorted back to the safety aspect of my life at the time. The same safety aspect that I had lived the previous 3 days being a passenger is the death trap that had gotten me to Larned. I decided to go play on the railroad cars. For the rest of our stay, Mike and I would climb all over the ballast cars that were spotted behind Uncle Chuck's. I knew nothing about railroading, anything that would move, we would move it. We had pennies on the track waiting for the train to come. For 2 days we never saw a headlight. On the 3rd day we finally saw one. It seemed like it took 3 days to get to us. When the train finally went by us, I noticed that the engines had a big Santa Fe on their side. It was the first time I had ever seen a Santa Fe locomotive. I still have the pennies that they smashed in a box.
I do not know why this little scene in Ponder reminded me of Larned, KS. I would like to think that the photo is real similar to the scene that was behind Uncle Chuck and Aunt Mina's house. Maybe it was waiting on the trains. Maybe it was Springsteen on the radio singing 'Seeds' that got me thinking about hard times and how the Berryman kids from Larned grew up in the Dust Bowl, I do not know. I do know that I have not been back to Larned since 1983. Maybe a road trip is in order to see my childhood scene again.

This rural forest-like estate historic district was the residence of Luis Muñoz Marín from the 1940s until his death in 1980. Luis Muñoz Marín was the first Puerto Rican governor elected by the people. Luis Muñoz Marín is also called the “Father of Modern Puerto Rico,” a key figure in the development and implementation of Operation Commonwealth, Operation Bootstrap and Operation Serenity, one of the most revered leaders in Puerto Rico’s history, Luis Muñoz Marín is one of the most important political figures of the Americas in the Twentieth Century.
Previous to his tenure as the first home-rule governor, Muñoz Marín had a distinguished careers in journalism, as both a reporter and director of a newspaper, and political activism. After returning from the United States where he studied as a young man and adult, Muñoz Marín joined the Socialist Party and the Free Federation of Workers of Puerto Rico. Both groups were dedicated to fight against poverty and the inequality suffered by Puerto Ricans, causes that he fervently endorsed. He campaigned across Puerto Rico extensively and participated in workers strikes to better the conditions of workers. During the Great Depression Muñoz Marín and others popular figures effectively convinced President Roosevelt to extend the New Deal and other important efforts into Puerto Rico. All the meanwhile, Muñoz Marín and his associates were taking their political campaign to the next level and established the PPD, the Popular Democratic Party (Partido Popular Democrático), which won twenty-nine out of seventy-six municipalities in the following election. In the 1948 general elections, Luis Muñoz Marín became the first Puerto Rican governor elected by the popular vote. His election as Governor stood up against hunger, injustice, ignorance, sickness and oppression. By the 1950s, after the implementation of Operations Commonwealth and Bootstrap, an “economic miracle” was taking place in Puerto Rico; the Island was now a modern urban-industrial society.
The main house is made mostly of concrete, with the exception of wood doors and windows. One of the most impressive features is an L-shaped balcony accessible from the sizeable living area. The main house and office contain all the furniture, art, books and household items from the time Luis Muñoz Marín and his wife lived on the property.
The library/personal office is another concrete building contributing to this historic property listing. The spaces in the library have all the period furniture, books and items of its owner on display just as he left them when he died. The library/personal office was built in 1965 along with an administrative office and archive building used mostly by Mr. Marín’s staff. Both buildings are significant because these were the spaces which Marín used to write his Memoirs and the other where important documents were first stored and organized.
Down a short pathway is the bohío, built in 1948, where the family gathered for activities and important meeting with dignitaries where held. The bohío was expanded by the family many times over the years and even replaced when it was damaged by a fallen tree in 1998. Though the original bohío does not stand, the historical significance of this space is not lost. Today’s version is a rectangular wooden shed supported by five columns wide, six columns in length and two center columns. All beams and rafters are wood, the floor concrete patterns, and the ceiling is built with Palm tree foliage covered in zinc shingles.

The position of the KKxE/AxxxK motif in the specificity loop is indicated by a bar; further K residues that may contribute are highlighted by light blue and most ciliate PIPK1, but not PIPK2, genes confront to the consensus KK motif. Note that in all but 2 ciliate PIPKs the +2 position (E/A residues) in the specificity loop is occupied by a Glu residue as in all PtdInsP 5-kinases.

Webpy Howto
For the moment I'm going to try using Webpy. Why?
Well I like the fact that Aaron could get an app up quickly without having to make lots of adjustments to existing code. I'm not so sure this is the case with django. Which bits can you use? What bits are being left out?
I suppose the biggest problem I have with django is the size of the codebase you have to upload. More code, more moving parts and the greater chance for something to go wrong. Plus the fact you have to use a hack to even start (django_bootstrap.py). I don't think this is the real problem though. The real problem starts when you have to set up your local application and try to get it to run on appengine. There is a couple of little tricks & problems I've found. The approach is far from seamless and prone to error that will compound adding large frameworks. Not a show stopper but annoying enough to slow you down. The google developers are really pulling the stops out for django support so don't assume not choosing django now will stop me using it in the future.
Problems
The following solutions below should give you enough information to get webpy up and running. If you have an questions thow a question to this google app-engine thread, twitter.com/bootload or email me. Below is a list of the problems you will encounter.
1) Cannot run webpy locally:
I've encountered a few problems. The first is "how do you run webpy locally?" The problem is you may have webpy installed, the webpy code (web tree) in your current directory. But how does your local code find it? [1] Hidden in the documentation is a hint to make a symbolic link to the code you wish to use. Here is how:
* We wish to use Webpy and "import web"
* make sure you have a copy of "bzr" (debian/ubuntu): "apt-get install bzr"
* download the latest (0.3) webpy install version (0.3): "bzr get webpy.org/bzr/webpy.dev/;
* install the latest webpy, cd into webpy.dev & install: "python setup.py install"
* in the directory you have installed your app-engine client, create a symbolic link to a newly created directory called "web" to your webpy installation.
* ln -s /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/web web
The result is something like this with the app-engine code, your code (helloworld & hellowebpy).

This now allows you to run your webpy code on the development machine.
2) Run webpy remotely :
In your source code directory (in my case, hellowebpy) take a copy of the webpy.dev/web directory and paste it into hellowebpy/. The result is something like this:

* upload your code + the webpy "web" code using appcfg.py: "./appcfg --noisy -e foo@bar.com update hellowebpy/" (remember to use your email address)
3) Problems with errors and c-based code :
If you have installed code like Cheetah you will get an error saying you cannot run c-based code. The reason is the dev_appserver.py code assumes the Cheetah code you have is trying to make a call to some cPython code, strop (a C based, string library optomised for speed). [3] The solution is to un-install Cheetah from your system. The google app-engine code base has a modified version of Cheetah removing all C code based routines. Be warned.
4) Problems uploading new code? :
I've had problems updating code sometimes. I suspect caching is the problem. So go to your root directory in your account and search for ".app*". You should see the following files, .appcfg_cookies and .appcfg_nag. Delete them both. Create a new directory, delete the index.yaml and copy your old code into the new directory. Then re-run the upload sequence ... "./appcfg --noisy -e foo@bar.com update new_directory_with_your_code/"
Following these steps should allow you to run webpy. Remember the example Aaron shows is for version 0.3. It was mentioned in the google-appengine webpy post others managed to get 0.23 to work. Try what they suggest. The example code works as shown for 0.3.
