I was finally back to Mono Lake for my second visit. The first visit here with the bootcamp crew wasn't so pleasant. Hwy 120 was closed due to snow. We attempted try to hike to the lake through 3 feet of snow, and that was a complete disaster as well, so coming back to this location for another try was very exciting to me. The excitement was sucked completely out of me when I saw that there where crystal clear blue skies when I arrived. At one point this guy comes up to me about an hour before sunset and said "wow look at this light, it gets no better than this." I'm not sure what light this guy was seeing, but believe me the light was not great, especially at the time that he was talking about. I was somewhat discouraged, but when I arrived I saw reflections of the tufas everywhere. I figured I'd concentrate on the reflections than photograph this wide view with an uninteresting sky. I walked around over an hour to see if I could see a comp that I would like to possibly shoot once the sun fell behind the mountains. Although there were clear blue skies, I knew that there would be some type of afterglow towards the east and if I stuck around I may be able to make something happen. The water was completely still, the reflections were like glass. It was somewhat eerie to see the water so still. Sure enough the afterglow came. I wasn't expecting the glow to be this intense. The glow on the horizon was incredible. When I took my first shot, I couldn't believe how clean the raw file was. I didn't use any filters at all. No CPL no grad....nothing. One exposure.
Hope you guys enjoy the image, have a great week, and happy shooting.
And I have to thank my buddy Jean Day for encouraging me to post this image, because if it weren't for her, this may have been sitting for a while in the hard drive. Thanks buddy!
Genevieve is the one with the flag held high. I was chosen because I am precisely 72 inches tall and have a very cute butt in Bellbottom dungarees.
Anybody want to hazard a guess?
(No, the tags won’t help you out in your guesses….. grin)
As it turns out the other side of the sign made it clear.
This is definitely a ‘just because’ sort of shot.

I – Interviewer
A - Alisha
I: Tonight we have BNTM Cycle 6 Kimbra’s Boot Camp contestant, Alisha, as our special guest, It’s great to have you here tonight – you look amazing!
A: Thank you so much for having me, it’s great to be here – I’m so excited!
I: So what has Boot Camp been like for you so far for you?
A: The experience has been great so far competition wise! The living conditions could be a little nicer but it is called Boot Camp for a reason! The Cabins are honestly disgusting - bugs everywhere! The bunk beds aren’t so bad, I’m sharing with Serena currently!
I: So you received FCO last week, making that your second FCO of the cycle. Would you say you’re feeling confident in the competition right now?
A: Yeah I did it was amazing! I received so much positive feedback from viewers and the other girls for my photo but I honestly wasn’t expecting another FCO! I mean it feels great to have two FCO’s under my belt but I’m definitely not feeling confident, you have to take each week as it comes! I mean this week I could be in the bottom two or even go home – you just never know!
I: If you didn’t think you were going to get FCO then who did you expect to get it? Would it be safe to say you consider the competition to be very unpredictable?
A: Oh Dotti for sure! Her photo this week was killer, she was really sweet about my photo as well! I wouldn’t say unpredictable but it’s all about opinions! I might think my photo is amazing and Kimbra might hate it but you have to wait until panel to find out! Thankfully that hasn’t happened yet!
I: So tell me about the other girls at bootcamp, who are your friends?
A: Kathryn, Lagertha, Serena and Vita are definitely my good friends at bootcamp! I’m really easy to get along with and I love meeting new people so I’ve found it quite easy to get along with people! I mean I’m here to win and I didn’t come to make friends but I can pick up a few friends along the way right! I mean we all have bad pasts but we’ve grown so much in the competition as people and it’s great to see other sides to people! I just need to keep focused on the competition and not get distracted by the friendships I’ve formed
I: Who do you consider to be your biggest competition? We want to know everything!
I’d also consider my friends to be my biggest competition but anyone that’s gotten a FCO is a threat for sure! Kathryn has taken some amazing shots but I know she wants me out of the way! I helped install her new weave which I regret doing – I mean her new look is point and I want to win! Lagertha is really fun, she’s amazing at hair braids – I mean have you seen her hairstyles? Incredible! She braided my hair the other night, we get on really well. Serena is a fun girl but not somebody I want to get on the wrong side of. Her new look worries me, I mean she looks amazing as a blonde so clearly she’s very versatile making her big competition! Vita is another one with a super unique look! I mean she has blue hair? She’s very cool, we eat a lot of Chinese food together! Dotti is very experienced when it comes to modelling which makes me worried as I’m a newcomer, she has moments when you see the Dotti we’ve seen before on other Reality TV Shows but generally she is okay to be around!
I: You seem to be envious of some of the girls new looks, Is a hair makeover on the cards for you?
A: I’m not sure, I’d love to get like a super long weave but my hair for now is fine! I’ve had it curly and pinned back out of my face for most of the cycle so far, so tonight I thought I’d keep it down and opt for a loose wave instead!
I: Ooh interesting! So what do you think about Kimbra as a judge?
A: She’s very supportive and easy to get along with! She definitely gives you things to work on to help you improve and wants all of her campers to do well! Personality wise she’s very much the Kimbra you saw on TMI, really fun and great unless you get on the wrong side of her!
I: It’s been great talking to you tonight, Alisha!
A: Thank you so much for having me!

I don't know why they had to feed us spaghetti today! We thought it was going to be a great meal. As it turns out, we have to run an extra 5 miles today as well as run the obstacle course and shooting drill. I'm one of very few men out here who hasn't lost his supper yet.

The Macro Photography Bootcamp is a series of intensive workshops designed for intermediate to advanced macro photographers. The only requirement is a feverish passion for macro photography and entomology, with a strong desire to elevate your macro shooting skills to an advanced level. This will be a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself into the rich biodiversity of insects, spiders, reptiles and amphibians of Borneo's pristine rainforests. At the same time, it will be an amazing bug-hunting experience with a group of like-minded, passionate individuals! To top it off, it is close to the end of the milky way season in the region and there should be ample opportunities for milky way photography!

For the Strobist Bootcamp, assignment 2 "Background"
It turns out (my imaginary) Pat Coolwall makes grafitti-resistant glass walls, as seen in the background.
Please let me know if you think some of the alternatives would work better. Alternatives can be found here.
This one is not very tight, but on the other hand that allows for cropping and leaves room for typography. And I like the grafitti idea on the right. Thoughts?
One hard light on stand to camera left and in front of subject, one hard light just slightly behind the subject to the (camera) right (behind steel structure/fence).
This is the fourth concept that I had for the strobist bootcamp assignment (the third idea didn't turn out so well; I won't bother to post it). This bottle was a total nightmare to light -- I only have one light, which makes glass especially difficult to light properly. This was lit with a strobe on the right behind a huge white plastic bin to spread the light out. On the left is a large sheet of white paper, propped close to the bottle so that the reflection runs the entire length of the bottle. Behind the bottle, I have a white piece of paper cut to the shape of the bottle. This reflects the light through the bottle so that the blue color shows up better.
The coins were equally difficult, since I had to drop them with one hand and trigger the camera with the other. I probably have 50 or 60 different shots that didn't turn out right at all!
Next time I am going to shoot a clear bottle -- it would be (was) so much easier...
Strobist Bootcamp assignment #4
Flash trough hanging plastic (trying to get a strip-light effect) about 45deg to the left, white sheet of paper about 45deg right, tungsten-gelled flash from below on white background.
