Fresh morning light shines upon Boot Arch after fresh snow blanketed the area the previous evening. Winter. It’s still winter right? No, of course it is not. We’re a few weeks into spring, but I had intended to post more winter pics before a certain world calamity took hold. Like the flick of a switch I reprioritized my life to put health and safety first. And with everything going on photography while on my mind just has faded away from the priorities. Planned and unplanned trips evaporated, uncertainty clouded all thought. My cameras have not left their bags. But, here’s a happy image from Thanksgiving weekend before the storm clouds rolled in over humanity. The Sierra Nevada are enveloped in fresh snow, and the brilliant white frozen water contrasts with the warm hued granite of the Alabama Hills. Boot Arch stands proud in front of Lone Pine Peak’s triangular summit. The air was calm. The silence was sublime. When we all emerge from the pandemic storm, the mountains will be there waiting for us to return. I cannot wait to get back. I sincerely hope you and your family are safe from this pandemic. Stay home, stay safe, and wash your hands.
Silver boot charm on one of my wife's bracelets. Amazing how much detail there is in something so small, and briliant how the maker has captured the ruggedness of an old boot so effectively.

Merry Christmas!
Less than 100 years ago, we thought the Milky Way was the universe. On December 30, 1924 Edwin Hubble after whom the Hubble telescope is named after, discovered that the Andromeda is actually a galaxy and there are other galaxies out there like ours. Of course now, scientists think there may be other universes than our own. We are just a very infinitesimally insignificant part of the yet to be understood multiverse. 50 years ago today, the crew of Apollo 8 witnessed Earth rise in the dark void of space over the lunar horizon. Now on the image presented here..
After we were made to feel unwelcome enough by a workshop group at Mobius Arch, my friends and I moved to the Boot Arch. We had scouted the area earlier during daylight hours but still the quarter mile hike in the dark seemed to last longer since there are fewer rocks and features to use as landmarks near this area. And luckily it was chilly enough that any hungry reptiles were were probably asleep.
At the time, I was convinced about which part of the rock is the “Boot”. I did not know the facts until much later. Apparently this is also called "The Lady's Boot Arch”. It sure does not look like something a cowboy would wear. There is still a lot more interesting subjects to shoot in Alabama Hills with its endless possibilities and compositions. Since the early 1920s, 150 movies and about a dozen television shows have been filmed here in the archetypical "rugged" environment. Legendary actors like John Wayne, Steve McQueen, Humphrey Bogart, Charles Bronson, Burt Lancaster, Clint Eastwood and Gregory Peck to Jamie Foxx worked to create cinematic history here.
This image is a single row panorama of 5 vertical frames. Each frame had 10 exposures stacked for noise reduction. So, 50 shots in all. Except for the low level light shining through the boot arch, the rest is from ambient star light. Alabama Hills is a Bortle 2 dark sky location and is dark enough to see the structures in the Milky Way easily with the naked eye.

Another quicky, maybe two hour build time; just an attempt at a spindly tree. I bought more brown hoses, so I kinda went crazy with them here.

My wet foot inside a wet boot. I love these boots but why can't they keep my feet dry in a very heavy rain? Ya Ya - not made for that task.

On the south part of Rampart Ridge an enormous rocky prominence soars up and then falls in a steep cliff before splitting north and south. We sat on top of the huge boulder which formed the edge of the cliff. I wanted to put both feet over the edge but the slope of the cliff was wrong, so I contented myself with a single boot shot!
The highway in the middle right is I-90 and Gold Lake is to the right of my boot. Dungeon Peak is on the upper middle left.
