Boot room at Moons Hill Quarry, Somerset. We had to wear hard hats, hi-vis jackets, and boots to go into the quarry areas.

I’ve been sewing a bit recently and when I saw that we could make a Christmas project using unusual Christmas colours this week, I knew straight away what I wanted to make! Sometimes when I give a gift voucher as a present at Christmas, I like to put it in a Christmas stocking I’ve made, along with a few sweets or fun little items.

For the unexpected colours, I decided to use red, pink, white and silver and gathered up lots of pink and red fabric scraps. I stamped some of the scraps using white, silver and pink inks , did some sewing and ended up with this crazy patchwork boot.

All I know is that she got them in Tucson. The city of my Alma Mater.

Als zu später Stunde Boote von der Türkei nach Griechenland übersetzten, konnte ich in den Gesichtern die peinigende Angst der Geflüchteten sehen.

Denn ist so ganz anders, in ein Boot zu steigen, wenn die das tiefe Schwarz nicht erkennen lässt, wie hoch die Wellen sind und wie weit es noch bis zum anderen Ufer ist.

Selbst ich habe manchmal Angst, wenn ich Nachts alleine durch die Stadt laufe und ein paar Laternen kaputt sind. Wie muss es dann sein, auf dem großen Meer zu sein?

Doch die Nacht versperrt auch die Sicht der türkischen Polizei und macht in vielen Fällen eine Flucht erst möglich. Immer wieder werden Geflüchtete von türkischen Einsatzkräften verhaftet – und nach dem EU-Deal mit Erdogan sind die Bedingungen nicht besser geworden.

So wollen die Ankommenden häufig einfach nur raus aus dem Boot. So schnell wie möglich an Land. Dadurch entsteht jedoch eine gefährliche Hektik, die nicht selten zu Verletzungen führt. Dieses Foto verdeutlicht diesen Eindruck.

Ich habe gesehen, wie unterkühlte Kinder zitterten. Wie schwangere Frauen sorgenvoll dreinblickten und ältere Männer auf dem Boden zusammensackten, sobald sie ein paar Meter auf griechischen Boden waren.

Es ist grausam, zu fliehen. Besonders bei Nacht.

I've basically spent a couple of weeks trying to work out how to technically set this up, without having to completely fill a boot with warm custard. Needless to say, I solved the problem!
