My new investment?

I bought a sewing machine. Specifically for scrap booking, but it will be a bonus if I can use it to hem clothes and stuff.

Today I have successfully done the bobbin thingy, threaded the needle (it has a "self threader", but that is deceiving, you still have to figure out how to get it to do that) AND practiced several different stitches (on paper). Mostly, I can't tell the difference other than some look messy and the regular one just looks...well...regular.

Is it a bad thing when you open the accessories drawer and you don't know what any of the things are inside? I think I see extra foots (feet?). Why would you need extra? I only have one pair of feet and I'm totally fine with that. There's some sort of a little baby brush, I assume I'm supposed to clean something with it. A bunch of other stuff that I know so little about, I can't even describe them for you.

Oh, and one more thing...Did you know that it's really difficult to SEE when you do this???? Everything is all...little and stuff...you have to hold your head back and be in a very well lit area and open your eyes really big-like. I'm sure it has NOTHING to do with my age.

EXCLUSIVE BOOKING FOR ITALY

When it comes to records Vincent Thomas knows both sides. In most producers' biographies there is a straight line from spinning records to producing records. In his case it's different: Vincent had his hands at the production controls as well as on the turntables.

The Producer

"Shingaling" evolved from an underground club track to an international chart hit in the course of only a few weeks. For Vincent Thomas, who produced the track jointly with Jean Claude Ades, this is the final breakthrough: "Shingaling" was #1 in the German Club Charts, #1 in the Belgian dance charts, the Italian Dance & sales charts, and (even for four weeks) at the top of Beatport.com. The Original Mix of "Shingaing" was the best selling Electro House Track on Beatport.com in 2008 and nominated for the Beatport Music Awards as "Best Electro House Track in 2008" (#2). In the German Dance charts "Shingaling" reached #3 and #6 in the Dutch Nieuwe Top 40 singles charts. The song has been published in seven countries by different labels: Great Stuff, Ministry of Sound, Vendetta, Frenetic, Blanco y Negro, Ego, NEWS.

Various singles and remixes have been licensed for the following compilations: "Love Parade 2008 - Highway to Love Compilation", "Viva Rotary Club Summer 2008", "Pacha Ibiza 2008/2009", "Clubbers Guide to Ibiza 08", "Ministry of Sound Bites Summer Club 2008" and many, many more.

Even though chart performance is not his benchmark for success and he doesn't adjusts his production work to that, Vincent rejoices it as a form of appreciation. Being in the Beatport Top 100 with "Heureka" and "If I Had Known This Before" in 2010 was a welcome confirmation.

In SWINGS, a sub-label of Great Stuff Records, Vincent had found a record company with the same philosophy as he represents himself: to create good, successful club tracks.

After numerous remixes for acts like Jerome Isma-Ae, Jean Claude Ades, Tom Novy, Paul Harris on labels like Ministry of Sound, Cr2, Armada, Swings, Harem, Ultra and Kontor, Vincent Thomas was able to definitively establish himself in the music scene.

Letting real musicians, a 15-member Cuban band, re-record an old Latin Jazz hit instead of just using a sample of the original song, was an unusual approach, Vincent admits. "Sometimes it's better to leave the well-trodden tracks".

One of the decisive factor was not least the support of acts such as Groove Armada, Eric Morillo, Pete Tong, Fedde Le Grand & Funkerman, Tiger Stripes, Djuma Soundsystem, Deetron, DJ Chus & David Penn, Agoria and Tim Deluxe, who played "Shingaling" again and again. "That remains, even in times of the Internet, the foundation for success," Vincent Thomas is convinced.

The DJ

"DJing has to be performance", reckons Vincent Thomas and adds: "For me, DJing isn't just putting on one record after the other." Due to technical evolution the role of the DJ has changed more and more to being an entertainer and performer.

His mixing style reflects his approach towards music and production: "Diversified, but consistent with a concept".

Combining different styles of electronic music from all over the world in order to conceive a coherent, danceable sound – that's how Vincent describes his method of operation. House and Techno magazine "Partysan" declared his style "Electro House at it's best!".

That's why Vincent doesn't stuff his case with music from only one style but with a rich variety of records from Club House via Electro to rather tech-housy, progressive sounds. That implies not to follow an already falling trend yet to trace current sounds and having tomorrow's sounds already in his DJ case.

Vincent is constantly playing impressive shows around the globe as well as big venues like the Loveparade. For the Loveparade in the city of Dortmund (2008) and Essen (2007), Vincent was DJing at "Rocker und Freunde", an after-show party presented by the renowned radio station 1LIVE and played with acts such as Fedde le Grand, Paul van Dyk. Bad Boy Bill, Moonbootica, Lexy & K-Paul.

The interest in Vincent's unique DJ-shows and uplifting productions keeps on growing. Be prepared for a few surprises!

Not much between the teams but the home team edged it, scoring early on then a penalty converted after 60 minutes. Troon got a penalty soon after but it was saved.

MAMUTRIP te lleva a conocer Francia, Australia, Perú y Dinamarca. Reserva ya en booking.mamutrip.com o a través de mamutrip.com.ar/

Edinburgh Waverley railway station

Predominantly 1892-1900 (W R Galbraith, consulting engineer for parliamentary plans to 1891; James Bell, chief engineer to North British Railway responsible for platforms, signalling and permanent way; J S Pirie, site engineer, Cunningham, Blyth and Westland – from 1893 Blyth and Westland – principal structural engineers including roof; P and W McLellan, general contractors; Herbert Waller Raithby, Blyth and Westland, chief architectural architect responsible for booking hall and offices); later alterations of various dates.

Extensive city-centre late 19th century railway station primarily at lower street level sunk next to Princes Street Gardens centred under and between Waverley Bridge and North Bridge (see separate listing), comprising extensive roof covering, station buildings and station infrastructure, ashlar arcaded screen walling, with suburban platforms with decorative awnings and various access points to north, west and south. The former parcels office (1898-1900) and Waverley Bridge (circa 1894-6) which forms part of station infrastructure, were designed and built by the same engineers. Waverley Steps (1868-74 with extensive early 21st century alterations), located to the north are not considered special in listing terms.

The 3-storey, rectangular-plan, Free Renaissance BOOKING HALL AND OFFICES building was designed by Herbert Waller Raithby (of Blyth and Westland), 1896-1900. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar and has railway offices at upper floors and later alterations for retail units at ground floor. It has Giant Order pilasters, keystoned cartouches, basket-arched doorways, and is flat-roofed with a central well lighting the booking hall. Base course, full entablature with dentil cornice above 1st floor, ashlar mullions. Clock with 1897 cipher and emblems of Glasgow and Edinburgh in keystones to east elevation. South elevation has bronze panelled war memorial to North British Railway dead of First World War. Variety of openings, some altered. Predominantly timber glazing with 15-pane upper sashes with some reglazing.

The booking hall interior rises to 2 floors and its facing ashlar elevations has Giant Order pilasters including a base course, plain frieze and modillioned and egg and dart cornice. Mosaic flooring is known to exist under later covering. Ground floor openings to peripheral shops and ticket area have been altered. All the keystones have cartouches some with carved cyphers. There is an elaborate 9-compartment ceiling, divided by coffered mahogany bands. Central dome, cast iron, with geometric tracery and small cupola, supported on drum with panels of putti and garlands. Outer glazed part with elaborate wrought iron grilles. Plaster panels in corners with arabesque and Rococo ornament.

The station roof is of ridge and furrow type with an aluminium cassette system with laminated glass. It is supported on cast iron columns and masonry screen and retaining walls, and on the central office block. Corinthian columns on elaborate octagonal panelled bases formerly acted as downpipes to drain the roof valleys.

[Historic Environment Scotland]

We made a short notice booking to Copenhagen, Jayne had the first week in September booked off and we wanted to try and do a city break. Five nights hardly seemed enough but the short flight was ok. We flew over home heading east on a beautiful morning. I love flying over an area that I know and being able to see it from above. We had been warned that Copenhagen was expensive-it was! I hadn’t done any research before we set off but on the flight over, I read that taxis were expensive, so it was best to use the Metro from the airport, it isn’t far in to the city and the Metro was fairly easy to use. However! We should have caught the train, I read this whist we were sat on the Metro it has to be said! The nearest Metro stop, which I was frantically trying to work out, using my phone, travelling in and out of tunnels, turned out to be a 1.5 mile walk from our hotel, the rail station was .5. Never mind we were there to walk-subject to my lately diagnosed arthritic ankle, we just didn’t want to be towing suitcases over cobbled pavements at the same time.

We were staying in the Tivoli Hotel which was described as central, it is near Central Station but you wouldn’t describe it as central to the city. Our room wasn’t ready but we could upgrade for a modest amount plus we realised it would be a good idea to include breakfast in the upgrade deal. A good move as it turned out. Our room overlooked the train lines-all twelve of them!! We could already hear train brakes squealing along with the thump thump of steel wheels rolling over points and joints. It’s true to say that Central Station is a 24/7 operation. The overnight noise didn’t bother Jayne but I could hear it all night.

We dumped our stuff and I loaded up with the backpack and camera and we were straight out there. Copenhagen is a relatively small city but there is a lot to see. We were soon finding out that it has an extensive network of canals and bridges and these are a major feature of life in the city. Pan flat, the cyclist rules, There appeared to be twice as many bikes as residents, with countless thousands propped up everywhere you went. Where ever you looked there was silent conveyor of sit up and beg cycles being ridden in all directions. You soon got used to looking over your shoulder before making a move. The vast majority of bikes are left unlocked and almost no one wears a helmet ( I’m a no helmet man, much to the annoyance of the helmet zealots). Copenhagen is reputedly the happiest place in the world and it certainly came across as friendly and relaxed. It is, though, one of the most expensive cities in the world and two burgers and two small glasses of wine at Nyhavn cost us £50. Comically, there were four people, local to us, shouting out Jayne’s name, they had seen us going past and we had a laugh about the prices, They were sat drinking beer at £8.50 a pint. Despite the expense, the place was packed with people parting with their money. Wages are very high locally, as are the taxes. The high wages and high costs must feed each other in an upward spiral I would have thought.

Unfortunately the cost of entering buildings to go up towers etc. for a higher view of the city was also very expensive (to us). The tower at Christiansborg Palace is free but restricted by the lift system and you don’t get to the top, it does also open later than the others so you have a chance of seeing sunset over the city. Unfortunately the lifts were out of order on one of our best weather days. We did get to go up the day after but it was dull and I wasn’t overly impressed. The spiral tower across in Christiana, The Church of Our Saviour, was far more impressive. We climbed the tower here just after it opened on a stunning morning and the views are fantastic. There will be incredible bottlenecks when it’s busy though on the corkscrew stairs that get progressively narrower towards the top. Some people hog it to take endless selfies at the top and it is extremely tight up there, you can’t move up until they come down.

As usual, we tried to get to some out of the way places, with only five days and mixed weather though we had enough mainstream destinations to see. We had a day of heavy rain so we went back to the rail station which was a good indoor (and free!) destination, and made umbrellas and the rain the focal point of that days photos. The entire Danish navy seemed to be at anchor, we just missed an open day on one ship. Some I could photograph, others were guarded and had restrictions, I got the evil eye from a couple of guards as the spotted the big Canon in my hand. I can’t imagine that they could police the Japanese and stop them from getting their photos and selfies though. I always act very openly with the camera and if people look at me suspiciously I smile and give them the thumbs up. In a rail station I usually ask the police. In Central Station the police were in their station and I never saw one move out, it is covered by extensive CCTV but there were some very unpleasant people, drinking and watching for people being careless with their belongings. We were lucky to be in the station on Sunday as a tourist steam train arrived, it sat at the platform belching smoke and steam for fifteen minutes, it was also coming back in an hour so we had an expensive coffee and waited to see it again. There was big military event outside the Christiansborg Palace on Monday, with a parade through the city that came past just as we were in a good spot to view it. The area was full of soldiers wearing their medals. We haven’t discovered the reason, although someone suggested a passing out parade for new recruits. Maybe the ships were in port for this as well.

Tivoli Gardens is another big draw and we went in, again it was fairly expensive, it had been a stunning day and the biggest problem was contrast, with deep shadows and a bright blue sky. We stayed until dark, it opens late and is very colourful. We went on the world’s highest carousel and got flung around 260 odd feet in the air. Luckily, we also found a bar that served wine at ‘only’ £5.60 a glass so we sat and watched people have fun screaming and shrieking above us.

There are many buildings with copper domes, entire copper roofs, even modern buildings are often clad in either brass or copper to blend in with the ancient buildings around them. Like every city we have visited, tower cranes are in abundance. There is a lot of development going on and unfortunately a lot of it is around buildings that you would want to photograph. We walked 12 to 14 mile every day and took in most of the sights. We didn’t really do any interiors, only towers and the railway station. At the time of writing I haven’t looked at what I’ve got, I have around 3000 shots, some on the G1X which I used when it was raining heavily as it easy to put in a pocket. I have a lot less time for editing these days so it will be a long process I think. To save time I am going to create a list of generic tags that I can copy and paste to each upload – the time saving is enormous – so apologies to anyone who gets a photo of a canal when they wanted a steam train or vice versa.
