I have a few heroes. Frans de Waal and Frans Lanting are two of them. Frans Lanting is one of the best nature photographers, who won many awards, and Frans de Waal is one of the leading primatologists in the world, who's books I can recommend to everybody who wants to know something about our closest relatives, the Bonobo and the Chimpansee. As a young biology student I attended a college given by de Waal, before he went to America to become a professor.
De Waal and Lanting made a wonderful book about the Bonobo (Bonobo, the forgotten ape), the most elegant great ape IMO, and the pictures there were very inspirational. So when Ouwehand Zoo started a Bonobo group, I went and tried to make a few nice shots of which this is one.
Although I am not completely happy with the whole series (and I probably have to go back) I like this portrait of a young Bonobo who more or less is in deep thought.
When I was at the zoo on Monday the Bonobos were indoors as it was a rather cold and windy day and the Bonobos, especially the young ones, catch a cold very quickly. I think this young Bonobo is Kaju, born in December 2017, but I'm not sure as I recognize the youngsters by their mothers and I couldn't see his mother's face. The photo was taken at low light and through a very reflective glass. This was the best I could get.

It was very warm when I was at the zoo on Saturday morning, even the Bonobos stayed near the water where it's probably slightly cooler. The Bonobos have a lovely enclosure and asa visitor you get quite close to them but you always have to take your photos through glass. I discard most of the photos I take there because they turn out just blurry but I liked this one.

Taken through dirty glass with a 300mm ais f2.8 Nikkor and a 1.4 tele-converter then underexposed by 2 stops as it was so dark in the shade that the camera metering would have compensated otherwise.

Bonobos are part of the great ape family and are our closest living relatives, sharing around 98% of our DNA. They are physically different to the chimpanzee, as they are more slender, have blacker faces, central hair partings and red lips.
