A small collection of images from many - just a taste of the evening It was such fun

It's Bonfire Night and some fireworks are going off. I remember when I was a boy waiting eagerly for my father to come home from work and after he'd had a meal we went out into the back garden to light the bonfire with a Guy clothed in some of Dad's old clothes and let off fireworks .

Fireworks in Durham last week

It was a bit on the chilly side last night. My camera battery died just before the display started (which I hadn't paid to see) and so I had to borrow missydotb's camera. Not the best vantage point for fireworks, but maybe I'll have another go if there are displays tonight.

I hate fireworks. I hate loud noises and I hate explosions. I have not been to a fireworks display since I was about eight. And then tonight I decided - there is a challenge, I might as well brave my fear. I armed myself with noise cancelling earbuds, my classic rock playlist and a hat with ear flaps. I was fine until I thought they had stopped, pulled one of my earbuds out and then realised that they were hardly done, and the loudest of fireworks were yet to come. Because I had secured my hat tightly over my ears, I could not get the earbud back in and ended up with my hand clamped over my ear and my shutter release in the other.
