I was looking at the sunset and saw this heron in the corner of my eye. I am fortunate in that these birds often stay in the same position for a long time.
I was able to change lenses, reduce my ISO settings and properly expose this shot. Then it was back to sunsets.
So last night I was up late like always looking for a new place to shoot when I ran across some photos from this place called Bombay Beach. It's located on the east shore of the Salton Sea at two- hundred and twenty-eight feet below sea-level. It was quite the adventure to get here. I drove a total of 350 miles for about 20 minutes of light. From Huntington Beach to Palm Springs to Bombay Beach, and then to San Diego.. Really, it was to scout for tomorrows full moon. I'm thinking about starting my own seminars, but 1st I need locations. Would any of you be willing to join my seminar?
There's a lot more to the story, just give me a few... I need to eat something...
After getting lost, and missing most of the sunset, I finally found the rocks I was looking for, by this time the moon was rising & it was getting dark. The fog rolled in and the atmosphere changed dramatically, so I went from F11, 10 second exposures to F5.6 @ 30 seconds which still needed more time to expose. I posted this shot because it was the last from the night before I got spooked thinking the Loch Ness monster was going to pop out and eat me. Maybe it was the ghost town I drove through to get here? I just had a creepy feeling the whole time I was shooting. Hopefully tomorrow I get more time to be patient. =)
BTW~ This shot is SOOC besides the border, looking back at it now, it needs a little curve adjustment?

We have visited Bombay Beach on the Salton Sea several times over the past several years. Some art installations endure from year to year. The painted walls of deteriorated buildings are painted and repainted constantly with many painters adding the year in which their work was done, some also add their name.
This building is likely part of the Bombay Beach Biennale which occurs on random dates in the spring. The Biennale was founded in 2015 to provide renegade artistic, musical and philosophical expression outside of commercial galleries and events. It also highlights the ecological crisis of the Salton Sea. While thousands of people attend the party and many contribute art, music and performances of every description, we must have visited during a hiatus as we saw almost no one.
The permanent population of the town of Bombay Beach is around 230. In the 50's and 60's the Salton Sea was a premier destination for water skiing, boating and fishing but as agricultural runoff and increased salinity killed the fish and poisoned the water, the area was largely abandoned leaving many buildings to be repurposed for artistic expression. In recent years, artists and other creative people have returned to the town and thousands attend the Biennale events.

An art piece in Bombay Beach, a one-time resort, now virtual ghost town (pop 231) of derelict structures, bohemian homes, and salvagepunk art on the banks of the toxic Salton Sea in California.

Overcast morning created some eerie scenes. There is an eagle's nest in the tree on the right of the scene. There was at least one eagle in it, but too far for a good photo!
There is a lot of interesting artwork and sculptures here at Bombay Beach. The water has receded quite a bit and you have to drive about a quarter mile to get to the shoreline now. These two signs really stand out on the beach. The first one if pretty poetic for this area.
The cube in the water has an interesting story. The artist that created the work happened to be here shooting a music video for a singer trying to make a name for herself. He told me that he got a commission to create the piece as a tribute to an artist that passed away recently. The artist that passed had always wanted to put a cube into the sea, but never saw his dream come true. He has a few cubes in the town of Bombay Beach that you can see while driving through.
