Bologna is one of the food capitals of Italy and if you spend enough time wandering around you will come across the best place to discover this, the Quadrilatero Old Market just off Pizza Maggiore home of the best place in Bologna for street photography. Bologna has many attractive buildings as well as a rich history befitting a city a couple of millennia old still my favorite part of the city begins when the alley’s narrow and the inhabitants go about their day to day lives. The little fat man, no not the one trying to charm the lady but the one holding the sign announces the presence of one of the best deli’s in the city La Baita Vecchia Malga and is an iconic little character that I try to capture every time I visit.

I took this on Sept 14, 2011 with my D70s and Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Lens at 42mm, 1/60s, f4.8 ISO 220 processed in LR, PS +Lumenzia ,Topaz, and DXO Nik

Disclaimer: My style is a study of romantic realism as well as a work in progress

There are 38km of Porticos in Bologna - dating from the 11th century. In the Middle Ages all the developed cities were characterised by porticoes, due to the need of space for dwellings and occupation during a period of economic development.

At the end of the XIIth century an important change took place. In most cities it was no longer allowed to build porticoes. (people needed be licensed to use public space). On the contrary, in Bologna porticoes were defined as compulsory for all the streets where they were considered useful (as Law settled in 1288), also by preserving their public uses; this law is still in force.

Two thousand years ago, Via Rizzoli was already present with the name of Via Aemilia. The two towers Garisenda and Asinelli are the traditional symbol of Bologna, In the late 12th century, at least one hundred towers dotted the town's skyline, but today only twenty have survived the ravages of fire, warfare and lightning.
