Manual focus practice

All green was vanished save of pine and yew, That still displayed their melancholy hue; Save the green holly with its berries red...

-George Crabbe

In my sister's backyard in Austin Texas is this lovely holly bush and holly bokeh.

Using the 7Artisans manual lens wide-open (f1.2), outdoors, backlit, reflector used. This close-up (a decanter bottle turned on its head) shows the pros and the cons of this lens: sharpness is almost impossible to achieve at this distance and there is the issue of strong sun flares. On the other hand, this can be quite attractive in combination with the rich bokeh. Raw conversion in Luminar and macOS High Sierra.

This picture was taken on a hot summer day in Hungary. The children were playing a game to cool themselves down, tossing a bowl full of water and trying to catch it.

By shooting at 85mm and f/2.5 I was able to capture a shallow depth of field, with the bokeh turning the water drops into little balls of light.

A little something different today in terms of subject. I don't often stop to take photos of Robins but on this particularly cold and blustery day a few weeks ago, there was a large flock of them playing around in some foliage. Because of the way the sun was hitting them at the time, I was able to get low and create this really cool backdrop of color. It was a nice change to get some remaining fall color on such a distinctly winter day.
