Brindisi is a working man’s town that centers around the sea boasting a very large port and a long love affair with the Adriatic, it has a gritty feel but in a good way it has an air of excitement to it like a girlfriend awaiting a sailor returning from a long voyage.

Captured here is a sun dappled mid-morning view of Brindisi life on the palm lined Corso Garibaldi the center of the cities local business life, busy with the passage of the days gossip, the days shopping and second only to the lungomare for popularity with the locals.

Brindisi has been around for several millennia, it was the end of the road for the Roman Appian Way it played an important role as a trade hub with Greece and the Near East an activity it still retains to this day but not stuck in its past glory it has modern activities in aerospace and chemical industries making it a center technology in the Puglian region.

Deventer is vibrant, frivolous and bustling: a contemporary-monumental town.

Deventer is on two banks of the Ijssel. From the Ijssel quayside in the old centre, there is a view of the other side. It shows a green oasis: the Worpplantsoen. Walk or cycle there, via one of the two bridges connecting Deventer. Or use the foot ferry called Stokvis, which is a nickname for people from Deventer originating in Hanseatic times. From the other side, you are afforded a panoramic view across the town, with the Lebuinis church as stunning eyecatcher.

At one time boasting some 55½ miles of railway route, the travelling public on the Isle of Wight were better served than most places on the UK mainland during the first half of the 20th century. Not surprisingly this state of affairs didn't last and much of the network was permanently closed between 1952 and 1966.

Indeed in 1966 the network, still operated by steam locomotives and aged rolling stock, was rationalised to just 8½ miles between Ryde and Shanklin, and temporarily closed to allow a 3rd rail electrification project to be completed. The line would re-open in 1967 using cascaded and refurbished London Underground trains - the latter necessary to meet the tight loading gauge clearances.

In this shot, taken some 10 years after the units had been introduced, class 485 no. 044 and class 486 no. 034 leave Brading station bound for Ryde with a service from Shanklin. The units had already put in some 40 years of service on London Underground, and would eventually put in a further 25 years on the IOW network before being replaced in the early 1990s. They had certainly earned their keep.

Note the Guard stood at the open door watching proceedings - he certainly wouldn't be able to do that these days. See also the Southern Railway '7' sign, presumably a remnant from steam days indicating where 7 coach trains were required to stop.

An image taken almost 45 years ago to the day. I would eventually return a year later for another go photographing these units but, despite vowing to come back and spend more time on the island, it's a promise I've yet to fulfil. Scanned for full-screen viewing.

There are many varieties of Spirea, and some boast the most beautiful red tones in the autumn, as is the case with the leaves of this particular shrub. In mid summer flowers range from white tones to deep pink tones. Be careful if you plant it as it can self-seed and the seedlings are deep rooted and can be difficult to remove.

Snowflake water lily

Nymphoides indica (Water Snowflake) is an aquatic perennial boasting floating, round, flat, emerald-green leaves, 2-8 in. across (5-20 cm). Resembling water lily leaves, they create a lovely backdrop for the paper-white, snowflake-like flowers, 1 in. across (2.5 cm), that arise on stalks above the floating leaves.

The Netherlands is a small country of 16 million people, but it boasts a quarter of a million competitive speedskaters, and millions more who skate for fun. What's the story? Natural ice in the Netherlands is a rare occurrence. In fact, some winters there's no natural ice at all. Maybe that explains why the Dutch love to skate outdoors. They hardly ever get the chance! But when a cold wave hits, and the interconnected maze of canals, rivers and lakes freeze over, it's a spontaneous celebration, a national holiday. Infinite sea of ice is perfect for ice skating journeys. Ice skating is not only a Dutch sport, it also underwrites the history, art and culture of the Netherlands. Perhaps most importantly a good freeze provides the Dutch a chance to discover the wilderness and an outdoor challenge within their own landscape. The Netherlands are a long distance skater's dream. Hundreds of kilometres of potential routes can carry the skater to the heart of a wild landscape. Today after 4 years we went ice skating on the Ankeveense Plassen.

The Ankeveense Plassen is a real skater’s paradise. As temperatures plunge across Europe, many are cursing the cold. But not in the Netherlands. Many are hoping for further frigid conditions. Schaatsen op natuurijs is het leukste wat er is. Warm inpakken, muts op, handschoenen, schaatsen geslepen, slee mee en gaan. Helaas is het in Nederland niet zo vaak zo koud dat we echt kunnen schaatsen. Veel mensen grijpen vandaag nog even de kans om te schaatsen. Ondanks de waarschuwingen van schaatsbond KNSB om weg te blijven van meren, sloten en kanalen. Het ijs is op veel plekken niet dik genoeg. Daar lieten veel schaatsliefhebbers zich dus niet door weerhouden.. Op 26 januari 2017 verzamelden meerdere mensen op de Ankeveense plassen. Dat is de plek waar het ijs het sterkst was. Vaak wordt er aangehouden dat het ijs een centimeter of 10 dik moet zijn om veilig op te kunnen schaatsen, en het ijs op de Ankeveense plassen is op het dikste gedeelte maar een centimeter of vijf dik, maar dat weerhield tientallen mensen er niet van om toch even het ijs op te gaan. In Ankeveen was de meest gehoorde reactie: “het is dun, maar het kan wel…”. En dat leverde mooie plaatjes op. Mensen van alle leeftijden op schaatsen, kinderen die een buikschuiver willen maken, mensen die voorzichtig even willen voelen hoe het is om op het ijs te staan. De aantrekkingskracht van het ijs is enorm. Opvallend veel Amsterdammers zoeken hun toevlucht in Ankeveen. ,,Hier kan het al, bij ons op de grachten nog lang niet”, grijnst een meneer. ,,Het is windstil, lekker zonnetje, het is ijs is goed. Wat wil je nog meer?” ,,Natuurlijk kan je door het ijs zakken, maar het leven is niet zonder risico's. Je kan ook onder een auto komen, of er kan een vliegtuig op je huis neerstorten.”

What a difference 30 minutes and 24 km makes, we arrived in Zutphen damp but drying out the sun actually tried to break through several times after leaving the car at a nearby parking lot exploring our way to the old town of this lovely historic Hanseatic town.

Zutphen has been inhabited for over 1700 years and was founded by the Franks during the time of the Roman Empire making it one of Holland’s oldest cities.

Being founders of the Hanseatic League the town has always been prosperous and despite its small size boasts over 450 national monuments thanks to its long wealthy history.

When you are slogging about dripping wet hunched over loaded down with camera gear in the pissing rain you just have to persevere and hope for a break in the weather or good spots that can shield you from the wet while shooting.

For most travel photographers its not like we will always have another opportunity to be back in the same direction so good wet weather gear and umbrellas are the order of the day when traveling in the fall most especially in the Netherlands.

Captured here is the pedestrian mall leading to the Tower of the Walburgis church which was at one time 113m tall but since 1600 reduced to a mere 76m though small in stature it is still a beauty and has been around since the 13th century ushering the locals to sermon.

Ajuy beach boasts black sand due to its volcanic composition. This unique feature can be attributed to the formation of the island of Fuerteventura, which occurred millions of years ago through the combination of lava and sediment. The coarse texture and dark hue of the sand give it a distinct black color when observed from a distance.

Nestled on the western coast of Fuerteventura Island, Ajuy is a charming fishing village renowned for its panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. The caves and black sand beach are considered a national monument and therefore protected under Betancuria Rural Park.

Just back from a week on the wonderful Isle of Arran. Arran boasts four of the finest Corbetts (Scottish mountains between 2500 and 2999 feet) and here they all are. I'm standing on Beinn Tarsuinn, looking along the A' Chir ridge to the pointy peak Cir Mhor (centre), with Caisteal Abhail on the left and Goat Fell on the right. Between Cir Mhor and Caisteal Abhail you can make out the notch of the famous Witches Step. Hopefully this image conveys the unique character of the Arran Hills, sharp peaks and ridges made from huge blocks of grey and grippy granite. This was taken early in the morning before the sun burnt the cloud away.

A rusting 1963 Ford “Galaxie 500” still boasting its original Peacock Blue paint — a color also used on Mercury’s that same year. Ford had eight primary model designs in 1963 with about forty sub-variations. The original price tag on this ‘once proud’ Galaxie was about $2,800 and it came with a 390 cubic Inch V8. Those were the days.

This garden boasts over 1,300 dahlias plants with 300 varieties. Dahlias come in a variety of colors and forms. You will find the large “dinner-plate” size dahlias to the tiny ball dahlias, with all varieties in-between. From a single color to variegated to blends, this stunning garden displays the full range of colors of the dahlias and is amazing to see in person!!

Boasting an ornate clock that now tells the correct time exactly twice a day, the elegant awning and station building at Northwich station (opened in 1863 courtesy of the Cheshire Lines Committee) are getting a good soaking from the almost continuous downpour that afflicted the north-west for most of today.

Happily it didn't stop one of the key biomass supply lines operating into Drax Power Station as GBRf Shed 66741 'Swanage Railway' makes a scheduled stop in the passing loop with the 7.11am ex Liverpool Docks (6E09).

Back in the 1890’s Goldfield boasted 3 saloons, a boarding house, general store, blacksmith shop, brewery, meat market and a school house. Just when it looked like the town would outgrow Mesa, the vein faulted, the grade of ore dropped and the town died a slow painful death.

After several unsuccessful attempts to reopen the mines, the town did come to life again from 1910 on and off until 1926. After more than 115 years, travelers from all over the world still visit this gold mining town located on the historic Apache Trail and enjoy the excitement and grandeur of Arizona’s wild west

the ruins of the cook bank building in the ghost town of rhyolite, nevada. at the peak of a gold rush in 1908, rhyolite boasted a population of nearly 10,000. it was completely abandoned by 1920.

Early morning in the wonderful Glendalough Valley located in the Wicklow Mountains National Park. It stretches across almost 23,000 hectares south of Dublin. The largest of Ireland’s National Parks and the only one in the East Wicklow, it features wide-open vistas, winding mountain roads and fast-flowing streams that descend into the deep lakes of the wooded valleys, including St Kevin’s monastic settlement at Glendalough.

Ochre-coloured mountains, hauntingly beautiful forests, gushing streams and placid lakes – the Wicklow Mountains in County Wicklow boast some of the most striking landscapes on the island of Ireland.

Situated surprisingly close to Dublin city, and yet with an otherworldly atmosphere, the mountains’ unique landscapes have been an inspiration for poets and painters, as well as filmmakers, with major productions including Braveheart, Barry Lyndon, The Green Knight and Disenchanted all filmed here.

Back in the 1890’s Goldfield boasted 3 saloons, a boarding house, general store, blacksmith shop, brewery, meat market and a school house. Just when it looked like the town would outgrow Mesa, the vein faulted, the grade of ore dropped and the town died a slow painful death.
