The Gazebo at Duck. Hurricane Irene wiped out everything but the roof to the Gazebo but this year, it was finally restored. A marvelous place to sit and wath the sunset over the Currituck Sound. Have a great weekend and thanks for the visit.

Just needed a reminder that not everywhere is flipping cold like it was here today.

I tried to build a model of this classic truck and I think it turned out quite well.

Boardwalk Empire is up there with my favourite shows. Buscemi at his best. Highly recommended.

The Morning After ($)Pill - IMRAN™

When the seawater started flowing into the lower section of the home ( youtube.com/shorts/cQYugn7tyhM?si=7zYzGHDOqHSs09dh ) before midnight, I was pretty certain the dock would be shattered. With several hours of hurricane remaining and high tide approaching to coincide with peak storm surge, the unknown was how much water would get inside the home.

There wasn’t much to do about it. Worrying wouldn’t stop it. Stressing wouldn’t solve anything. So, I said a prayer of gratitude that it wasn’t worse, and went upstairs to sleep!

I literally had my first full eight hours of deep sleep in a long time - right through the worst of the hurricane. Waking up, and not finding myself afloat on a “water bed” in the middle of the ocean, I took a look outside.

My beautiful dock was indeed shattered beyond repair - actually far worse than I could initially see from this angle. It was rebuilt just a year ago and will need to be completely ripped and replaced.

None of that is covered by insurance. So this was a bitter $ pill to swallow, especially the morning after. Sorry, the wordplays (with no pregnant pause between them 😃) were hard to resist and too easy to conceive & deliver in one line(r). 😉

But, hey, at least the ripped up dock and boardwalk didn’t flip up with the wind & water and hit the house. I’m so blessed. My blessed home was still intact and a roof was still over my head.

Most importantly, I was still alive, healthy, safe, and grateful. Priceless. For everything else, there’s MasterCard.

The summer is over... wind, waves, unquiet ocean, dark sky and lonely seagull, everything is telling you "DANGER" @ Atlantic City beach

This self portrait was inspired by the character Pearl from Boardwalk Empire. I have a brand-new pop-culture-inspired set of images which this belongs to; you should see the rest of them!

Pearl has a somewhat sad story, as you might guess from the image, but it's an important one as it leads us to Richard Harrow.

See my blog for more of her story, detail shots and an *animated gif* of the whole editing process!

Many thanks to Handy Andy Pandy for teaching me how to create the gif!

HBO has been promoting the new season of their Prohibition-era series Boardwalk Empire by running a vintage 1920s train on the 2/3 lines on weekends in September. The train makes stops at 42nd St/Times Square, 72nd Street, and 96th Street. Today I got to ride on it! The train has vintage seating and lighting, old school subway maps, open windows, ceiling fans, and even some vintage looking riders!

I had never been to the Boardwalk area of Walt Disney World before. Wow. That area is amazing, like it's own mini-resort. Serene and beautiful, giving an idealized representation of the Eastern seaboard circe the 1920s, like what one might see on the show Boardwalk Empire. I'd stay here even if it wasn't surrounded by four Disney theme parks. The quiet walk along the boardwalk and beach (shown here) to Epcot after dinner one night was one of my fondest memories from the entire trip.

It was definitely one of those moments that made me realize that Walt Disney World truly is a world-class resort. If you think of it as just a bunch of theme parks, you're doing it wrong.

This self portrait was a very cathartic one to take. The inspiration for it came from the character of Richard from Boardwalk Empire.

Here's my latest design, a unofficial poster for one of my favorite TV shows Boardwalk Empire!

I have been thinking lately about making fan posters of some of my favorite TV shows, and this was one of the first ones that popped into my head.

If you have been following me on Dribbble, this final poster looks different from my previous attempts. In the end I didn't want this poster to be too busy and wanted to try and capture the feel of the show.

100% Vector. 24x18 final size.

Silent Portrait for Week #3 Movie Star theme for Teleidoscope

100 Quotes Project

Also Slid for Sunday & is now 15/50 for 50 Days of 50mm

I have always wanted to try a 1920s look ( esp since getting hooked on Downton Abbey and Boardwalk Empire) and with this weeks theme being 'Movie Star' over at Teleidoscope I decided on the Silent Era. I researched it a bit and already knew a few of the famous ones like Clara Bow and Lillian Gish but then discovered a Pearl White - which I took to be a sign. ^_^ I wasn't chanelling one Silent star in particular just the general pose and look of the time.

This fake bob is now my new favourite hair style too.

In the pilot for Boardwalk Empire there's a nice tight shot of a letterpress card (at about 41:49).

Someone working on the show understands the magic that details can contribute to making a show feel genuine. Next time you watch check out the lettering and typography on the posters and billboards along the boardwalk, for example.

Love seeing how classy and timeless a well-set type can look pressed into paper.

Maybe my typophile sisters and brothers can help out here but it looks to me like a bold, condensed slab serif (could be Clarendon or Consort), set with a wedge serif that might be Engravers Bold.

I always wondered how the colors of the 1920s looked because all photos and footage of that era are in BW. I got that opportunity on September 2011.

Here's an authentic 1920s subway train which came back to life for just one month on the 2/3 track during weekends. All thanks to HBO and its "Boardwalk Empire" promotion. Rattan seats, ceiling fans, drop sash windows and wide-eyed open-mouthed tourists.

What an experience. I wish I brown-bagged a beer and chugged along on the backdrop of this cool Prohibition-era detailing.

Here's my latest design, another unofficial poster for one of my favorite TV shows Boardwalk Empire!

Back in July I made a bunch of different designs for this great show. Since the show is back on the air, a lot of new characters have debuted, like Gyp Rosetti! The guy is awesome, and I had to make a poster of one of his best lines to date!

Essentially the father of the Chicago Outfit, "Diamond Jim" or "Big Jim" Colosimo was the forerunner of Johnny Torrio and Al Capone, having founded the South Side Gang.

Born in Italy in 1878, 17-year old Colosimo emigrated to Chicago and became a bagman under aldermen "Hinky Dink" McKenna and John "Bathtub" Coughlin who delivered kickbacks from the red light district. He later operated some 200 brothels and got involved in gambling & racketeering. Ulimately, he brought together the disparate criminal crews in Chicago and formed the city's first crime organization.

Harassed by the dangerous Black Hand gang, Colosimo enlisted his wife's nephew Johnny "The Fox" Torrio to come in from New York to be his second-in-command. Torrio brought with him his own bodyguard, Alphonse Capone.

When Prohibition came along in 1920, Torrio suggested that the gang become involved in selling bootleg alcohol. Colosimo disagreed, saying it brought too much heat on the mob. Later, Colosimo was ambushed and killed in the parlor of his own restaurant. Nobody was ever arrested for the murder but it was suspected that Torrio brought in Frankie Yale to snuff his former boss. Suspicion also fell on Al Capone. Torrio then took over the gang.

Located in Section E4, Oak Woods Cemetery, 1035 E. 67th Street
