Just like Dorothy’s road, this road has its own group of hidden dangers. Far worse than the Scarecrow, Tin man and the Lion. Here you are more likely to get run over by speeding cyclists (who never dismount), skateboarders, roller-skaters, Deliveroo riders and worst of all e-scooters who stop for no one!
Erect a tripod at your peril!

Last weekend's visit to the Quays with Mark, Gary and Geoff resulted in some new viewpoints that I hadn't considered in all my previous visits... mainly due to my reluctance for an early start!
I found the neon lighting very overpowering when first processed so have desaturated it quite a lot, which has helped with the office interior details.
I don't normally mess with the saturation slider but in this case I think it's helped.
The BBC has been operational at MediaCityUK since 2011
The footbridge support masts can be seen reflected on the Blue Peter building
Should have waited for the lights under the bridge to turn blue, unfortunately it was that cold it was only me turning blue, so as you can see we captured green

Shadows from the clouds were never far away, but the risk was well worth taking in the end, as 60532 'Blue Peter' crossed the River Ribble at Sherriff Brow heading Steam Dreams' 'The Lakes Express', 1Z32 08.30 London Victoria to Oxenholme, on Tuesday 9th September 2025.

To think I was trying to justify driving 100 miles (round trip) for this one shot. I am glad I made the effort. 60532 "Blue Peter" hammers past Abington loops with the Edinburgh Christmas Market tour returning to Kings Cross. Blue Peter was working the Edinburgh - Carlisle leg (1Z60) in perfect winter conditions.
A wonderful morning spent in Buxworth Cutting with friends old and new to witness A2 60532 'Blue Peter' return to main line duties after 22 years absence in charge of 'The Christmas White Rose' on November 20th 2024.
In glorious sunshine, LSL’s Peppercorn designed LNER 'A2' 4-6-2 no.60532 ‘Blue Peter’ passes Selside on the Settle & Carlisle, the first day of the London Victoria to Carlisle ‘Lakes Express’. The mountain in the background is the magnificent ‘Pen-y-Ghent’.
In a location lost on the regular steam paths these days A2 60532 "Blue Peter" sadly with just a grey haze from the chimney, heads north over Lunds Viaduct with "The Lakes Express" on September 9th 2025.
Having just turned 75 years of age LNER designed class A2 60532 'Blue Peter' has proved to be a well received reintroduction to the mainline scene.
I was lucky on Saturday that a a pal gave me the nod that she was working closely to where I live. Not only that but as I waited in the cornfield under a cloudy sky the sun popped out just a few minutes before her arrival.
Photographed on the East Coast Main Line just north of Doncaster at Fenwick with a Kings X to York special. She was running eleven minutes late but seemed to be working in fine fettle.
Superb early morning conditions as A2 Pacific 60532 'Blue Peter' is opened after passing Parkside East Junction traversing Highfield Moss on the Liverpool & Manchester Railway.
Saphos Trains 'The White Rose' to York required a very early start from Hereford.

The Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival ends with a “sail-by” where many boats of all kinds come out from the docks and show off. Here we can see: The 68 ft. schooner Suva which was built in Hong Kong in 1925. A sloop I do not know, the 51 ft yawl Pacifica that was built in 1947, and Blue Peter yacht. The 96 ft M/V Blue Peter, is a classic fan-tail yacht built expressly for touring and sightseeing in the Pacific Northwest. Launched in 1928 from Lake Union Dry-dock in Seattle, she is a beautiful example of the finest in yacht design and construction of her day. She has accommodations for eight overnight guests in five separate staterooms. The bright salon features a wood burning fireplace, cozy seating and enhanced wifi. Blue Peter is named after a signal flag that was used by ships to indicate that they were getting ready to depart.
The schooner Suva was originally designed as a gaff-rigged schooner. In 1960, Suva was re-rigged as a staysail schooner. She is available for charter out of Port Townsend, WA. schoonersuva.org/about-suva/
The 51 ft yawl Pacifica (7019) was built in 1947. She has raced in most of the major racing events in the USA and has sailed over 100,000 mile on her own. In 2014 she moved permanently from San Diego to Port Townsend.

I have a directory full of unstitched panoramas that I have not even bothered to label let alone process. This is an exception, but having shot it in landscape rather than portrait, there was a noticeable chunk missing off the top of the Imperial War Museum when stitched. So, it has laid dormant there for years.
Fast forward to a recent trip down to the Quays to show Paul a.k.a. shutterbug_uk2012 the sights and sounds of the area, ably supported by Eddie ‘Rainman’ Coulson. I only took a handful of shots myself, including a four frame pano, but I’ll save them for a rainy day as I’d like to see what Paul produces when he gets the chance from his busy day job.
But, back to the image… a few tips and tricks and I’ve managed to uncrop the stitched image and hey presto the top of the IWN wasn’t missing after all! A bit of filling in and clone work and it’s turned out to be a reasonable image in the end.
The newly restored Blue Peter rushes towards York with a private charter on the evening of July 13th 2024. Although there were showers all around, the train's arrival was greeted by a patch of watery sun! A magnificent sight indeed..

Salford Quays
After spending most of the afternoon in Manchester dodging the rain, we headed back to the Quays to meet up with Mike Dutson for a night shoot and hopefully a decent blue hour. The weather was suggesting otherwise and after a bite to eat and drink in Limes (why not, it was raining again!) we started to make our way round to the MediaCity bridge (left of shot).
I’ve not shot the Quays at night for a very long time and the excitement got the better of me. The sky was looking particularly menacing at this point and I thought grab what you can, while you can, so this is camera straight out of the bag… no setup and handheld, which I don’t like doing at slow shutter speeds, but that sky was too good to miss - a case of premature shutter action I guess!

It's amazing what you can construct using an old Half Crown of 1951 vintage, and a few Polo mints .... it's a bit like "Blue Peter" .... "you know a couple of old toilet rolls .... other bits and bobs .... then suddenly you get a lovely Robot, or Aircraft, or something else .... Ha, ha."
😁😹😂😊
A little information about the value of this English coinage.
One English Half Crown coin was valued at two shillings and sixpence .... equivalent to one eighth of a pound.
20 old shillings were equivalent to one English pound.
40 old sixpence coins were equivalent to one English pound.
"Those were the days!" .... when you knew money meant something .... well with all those heavy coins in your pocket .... "yeh .... the something was weight!"
Jingle, jingle.
😂😹
No wonder they had such large pockets way back when!
😁😵
No spearmint Polo's were hurt in the construction of this photograph .... "you may be glad to hear!"
Oh' .... but slowly sucked and gently dissolved in the mouth after the session .... and apparently .... that's ok in this PC world .... well had no complaints so it's really all good!
Happy Macro Monday everyone!
Please stay safe! 😷
Love & Peace 💕😻💖
