Looking at the Blue Mosque from the Hagia Sofia

抬頭望向穹頂,

那就像夏日陣雨一樣,安靜地降落在腳下柔軟的織毯上,

過後什麼也沒有留下。

This is Blue Mosque (Masjede Kabud) in Tabriz. Yesterday was holiday in Iran because of Imam Ali's death day, and it was a very boring day. So I went to Blue Mosque to shoot some photos.

Istanbul, Blue Mosque, 2013

The incredibly intricate adornment of the Sultan Ahmet Mosque, more often called the Blue Mosque due the predominance of blue in the interior decorations. Photos cannot do justice to the unbelievable detail and skill in the artwork.

With this mosque, Sultan Ahmet I (r 1603-17) set out to build a monument that would rival and even surpass the nearby Aya Sofya in grandeur and beauty. So enthusiastic was the sultan about his grand project that he is said to have worked with the labourers and craftsmen on site, pushing them along and rewarding extra effort.

Ahmet did in fact come close to his goal of rivalling Aya Sofya, and in so doing achieved the added benefit of making future generations of hotel owners in Sultanahmet happy - a 'Blue Mosque view' from the roof terrace being the number-one selling point of the fleet of hotels in the area. The mosque's architect, Mehmet Ağa, who had trained with Sinan, managed to orchestrate the sort of visual wham-bam effect with the mosque's exterior that Aya Sofya achieved with its interior. Its curves are voluptuous, it has more minarets than any other İstanbul mosque (in fact, there was consternation at the time of its construction that the sultan was being irreverent in specifying six minarets - the only equivalent being in Mecca) and the courtyard is the biggest of all the Ottoman mosques. The interior is conceived on a similarly grand scale: the blue tiles that give the building its unofficial name number in the tens of thousands, there are 260 windows and the central prayer space is huge.

The Blue Mosque, Istanbul.

Seriously, I can stare at this mosque all day long without feeling bored. It's such an amazing architecture.

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Turkish: Sultanahmet Camii) is a historical mosque in Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey and the capital of the Ottoman Empire (from 1453 to 1923). The mosque is one of several mosques known as the Blue Mosque for the blue tiles adorning the walls of its interior. It was built between 1609 and 1616, during the rule of Ahmed I. Like many other mosques, it also comprises a tomb of the founder, a madrasah and a hospice. The Sultan Ahmed Mosque has become one of the greatest tourist attractions of Istanbul.

The design of the Sultan Ahmed Mosque is the culmination of two centuries of both Ottoman mosque and Byzantine church developments. It incorporates some Byzantine elements of the neighboring Hagia Sophia with traditional Islamic architecture and is considered to be the last great mosque of the classical period of Ottoman Empire. The architect has applied the ideas of his master Sinan, aiming for overwhelming size, majesty and splendour.

We have had a short visit with the family to Istanbul. Amazing city. This is the Blue Mosque or Sultan Ahmed Mosque from close-up, build in the early 17th century.

Blue Mosque, Istanbul, Turkey

The amazing architecture of the Blue Mosque viewed from the courtyard just after dawn. I visisted the mosque early in the morning and it was a fantastic time to visit to beat the crowd as I was the only person there until a photo tour group joined me a little later. Luckily by that time I had captured a few images and was happy to move on.
