Blue Lagoon - One of the 25 Wonders of the World

One of the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen

Blue Lagoon, Iceland

About 50 kilometers from Reykjavik on the way to the airport is the Blue Lagoon. The water gets its color from silica and other minerals and it is a geothermal heated spa. The spa was fun, even as it rained on us at times, but the photo ops were even more fun because of the color.

The water really is this colour and is 37-39 degrees centigrade.. The Blue Lagoon geothermal seawater is a part of an ecocycle where nature and science work in harmony. The seawater originates 2000 meter/6562 ft beneath the ground where it is heated by earth’s natural forces. At this depth the temperature is 240°C/464°F and the pressure is 36 times the pressure on the earth’s surface. The geothermal seawater comes into contact with cooling magmatic intrusions and captures the earth’s minerals, resulting in this unique natural source known for its healing power and actives.

The composition of minerals in the water is very distinctive and has a high level of silica. Its environment is characterized by high temperature and salinity level of 2.5% which is 1/3 of the ocean’s salinity level.

Unfortunately, the weather was either raining or gloomy for the entire 5 days that we were in Bora Bora. However, the beauty of this island is unspeakable and one cannot help but fall in love in this magical place.

The small lagoon at the blue lagoon clinic hotel. Less than a quarter of the size of the blue lagoon and covered with a very slimy layer silica mud on the ground.

I spend a few hours soaking in there : )
