The story of how Liverpool signed Fabinho and why Nabil Fekir will be next

The sun had set over Merseyside late Monday night when Fabinho and Rebeca Tavares flew back to Monaco from Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport. On the plane, Fabinho and his wife clinked glasses filled with Champagne, as Tavares toasted the moment by saying, “We are Reds, baby,” with the sort of enthusiasm you see at a roulette table in a Las Vegas casino.

It had been the deal which surprised everyone, aside from those involved directly because Liverpool – with sporting director Michael Edwards leading negotiations – had quietly and aggressively been pursuing the Brazilian since February. In an interview with French radio, Fabinho would admit that Liverpool’s determination to sign him had been more focused and personal than the offers made by other parties over the last two seasons, including those from both Manchester clubs, Paris St Germain, Juventus, Internazionale and most recently, Atlético Madrid – though they were far too late in making their move.

“I spoke on the phone with [Roberto] Firmino,” Fabinho said. “I know him personally…I was able to speak with the manager and people who work at the club. They gave me a lot of confidence.”

During discussions, Fabinho had apparently been given the sort of treatment by Jürgen Klopp that convinced Virgil van Dijk waiting six months for his move to Anfield to materialise wasn’t such a hardship – even with Pep Guardiola wanting him to go to City.

According to Fabinho’s representatives, Liverpool’s surge to the Champions League final mattered most, though. It shatters the notion for some who have been quick to assess that defeat in Kiev has rendered the season as pointless. Being there alone has outlined Liverpool as an important club on the European stage once more, helping them dictate the transfer market rather than react to it, thus placing them in a stronger position than before.

Fabinho will replace Juventus-bound Emre Can. Can is a fine midfielder and Klopp wanted him to stay. Yet in the cold analysis, Can’s limitations were recognised and this explains why he was not guaranteed anything by Klopp in a sporting sense.

Can sees his future as a number 6 and had Klopp not been managing an English club, he probably would have agreed with him rather than suggesting he is effective for Liverpool in a more advanced position. For a deeper lying midfielder in a Klopp team, it requires the individual to be quick thinking as well as athletic and powerful. He must be able to speed up play as well as slow it down. Can will do well in Italy, where the pace of the game suits him.

There is a belief at Liverpool that Fabinho, Naby Keïta and Nabil Fekir, who is expected to sign from Lyon, will offer the sort of variety and speed that was unavailable in Kiev, where the class of Real Madrid was just a bit too much in an area of the field where Liverpool’s energy levels seemed to drain with all of the chasing, especially after the initiative swung following Mohamed Salah’s enforced exit.

For Liverpool, there are other encouraging signs. The club began last summer apologising to Southampton for the van Dijk fiasco, when everyone knew he was the primary target for the window only for details about meetings to surface in the public domain before the transfer was completed and delay it from happening.

This summer has begun positively, with a major deal being announced only an hour or so after the speculation started in France. It might not ultimately be good news for journalists but perhaps this is the start of a new code of omertà.

More than 20 bloggers and rights lawyers met today at the Association for Human Rights Legal Aid (AHRLA) to coordinate their anti-Mubarak’s police torture campaign.

The four hour meeting was divided into two sessions. During the first two hours, participants listened to tips and legal advise from veteran leftist rights lawyers like Ahmad Seif, director of the Hisham Mubarak Law Center and Tarek Khater of AHRLA, about the press law, loopholes the government uses in prosecuting dissidents, how police officers hide the torture marks, how to legally and journalistically document a torture case.

The talk and the disccusion that followed were open to the media.

Following the break, the participants started a second closed session to discuss past experiences, strategy and tactics in the coming period, emergency plans to face off the expected crackdowns..

The following were some of the suggestions that were brought up in the meeting.

1- A list of rights lawyers and journalists will be drafted and circulated among the bloggers. In case of suffering/witnessing any abuse, those names on the list should be contacted to report the abuse.

2- A workshop will be scheduled soon, where bloggers can learn more about cyber-security, how to protect their anonymous identities (if they are blogging under pseudonyms), and how to protect their private information from the government hackers.

3- A webpage will be set up, written by rights lawyers and edited by bloggers, with the legal information one must know if s/he was in a police station or undergoing interrogation, written in a simplified way, easy to be circulated among fellow citizens.

4- More volunteers are need to help contribute/edit the Torture in Egypt blog. More ideas are needed on how to develop this blog into a proper clearing house for information on police abuses.

5- More artwork is needed in the campaign. Whether it’s those video clips bloggers like Ahmad Sherif has been producing, or banners. Bloggers who have the technical and art backgrounds should transfer their experience to others. A workshop on photoshop and other art computer programs is to be scheduled.

6- A “Torture in Egypt Wikipedia” was suggested, including names, photos, and cases of Egyptian police officers involved in torture.

7- Rights activists were encouraged to not only take the torture victims’ testimonies on paper, but also to get video-testimonies, like the one AHRLA produced on Mohamed Badr Eddin Gomaa‘s case in Alexandria.

8- A campaign for the right of a detainee to a phone call when taken to custody, was also suggested by a rights lawyer, who asked the bloggers to help out with a banner that links to the campaign’s (still under construction) website.

9- More publicity is needed for the blogosphere among the citizens. Bloggers and rights activists are encouraging any suggestions and ideas, especially with the exponential annual increase in the country’s cybercommunity.

10- Offline campaigns are just as important. The strength of the Egyptian blogosphere comes from the active involvement of its members in street politics. Whatever literature produced online, the participants encouraged, should also be published into easy-to-read and illustrated booklets that could be distributed among fellow citizens (in demonstrations or through our friends, contacts, and networks).

11- Participants also suggested an active involvement in the coming 5th Cairo Conference‘s anti-torture forum.

12- For those involved in the anti-torture campaign, two days must be marked for more intensive action: "Egyptian Police Torture Day" 25 January and the International Day against Torture 26 June.

13- Evaluation is much needed to know the strengths and weaknesses of our previous campaigns, with the Hadayeq el-Qobba State Security torturer as a case study.

14- An email group will be set up that will include those who attended the meeting today, and those bloggers who would like to help, but couldn’t make it today.

15- The participant bloggers were all encouraged to report on the meeting on their blogs after they go home, and mobilize a bigger number for the next meeting scheduled Saturday 5pm, also at the AHRLA office.

This is a photograph from the annual Na Fianna AC "Bob Heffernan" 5KM Road Race and Fun Run which was held in Johnstownbridge, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Tuesday 19th May 2015 at 20:00. The race has gained a glowing reputation as being one of the fastest 5KM road races in Ireland. This race commemorates the years of work and volunteering that local man Bob Heffernan gave to Meath, Leinster, and Irish athletics from grass roots upwards and his work with the host club Na Fianna AC who have a catchment area in this part of rural North Kildare and South Meath. The race, known affectionately by club-members as simply "Bob's race" is a fitting tribute to commemorate his contribution to this sport. Today's race had another very large attendance with over 420 registered participants. There was a wonderful atmosphere as runners from all over Leinster gathered for a great night's racing. The very changeable and unseasonably weather of late made for an unpredictable night weather wise. A shower of hail fell on runners between 2KM and 3KM and yet this shower didn't fall on the finish area at the Hamlet Court Hotel.

This race is part of the annual Meath Road Race League despite the fact that the race is run completely in County Kildare. The Na Fianna club, who organise the race, have a catchment area of South Meath and North West Kildare. The current route for the race has stayed the same over the past few years. However previous to that the race was held in Enfield and also Rathmoylan in County Meath. This road race has grown from strength to strength year on year and is now one of the premier 5KM races in Ireland and one of the top club attended races in Leinster. The race starts on the busy Enfield to Endenderry road and this requires a big effort from stewards and marshalls. However, as always, the event was a resounding success with personal bests and great runs from many of the participants.

We have a large set of photographs from the finish of the race and they are available on our Flickr photostream at www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157653107820532

Let's get a bit technical: We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs

We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?

The explaination is very simple.

Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.

ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.

Above all what Creative Commons aims to do is to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!

Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably http://www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets
