I'm sure you've seen news footage of tornado destruction — houses turned into piles of rubble and cars turned into twisted sheet metal. What you rarely see is footage of the actual destruction happening.
So it is with this picture of Aidan. While you can see the destroyed remains of a cupcake, you have not witnessed what actually happened when a young mother let her cupcake wander too close to this young boy's hand.
Jess and I went with some friends to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center for a few hours. This is Aidan's first picture with the bluebonnets!
The boy is getting bigger. At his two month check-in, he weighed over 11 pounds and he's even bigger than that now. We've started playing with him on his stomach to get him rolling around. Some days he loves it and some days he hates here. Here he is loving it.
This is the sunset I was talking about on my blog. Pink!

We are having severe winter warnings with horribly low wind chills of 25 to 40 degrees below zero. The first day of winter is unleashing it's icy hell.
Our boy is a good-looking kid, but it didn't just happen by magic. I also have a beautiful wife who's done an amazing job taking care of a pesky newborn. I'm pretty sure the boy looks more like his mother (he certainly has her cute face), which is a good thing, because my wife looks great.
The wife has been cleared by the doctors to resume her normal heavy lifting. More time at the gym for momma means more time with me for Aidan.
Last night, my office had its annual Christmas party. This was Aidan's first venture out to an event with a large group of people. He performed very well.
The highlight of the party is a visit with Santa with gifts for all the children. Aidan got a gift, but more importantly, the parents got a picture of the baby with Santa.
Thanksgiving marked the first time the oldest person in our family met the youngest person in our family. That makes her a great grandmother.
Back in Tokyo, this time armed with my bike.
This was shot in Yoyogi Park this morning, it's absolutely beautiful.

Our kid is long — real long. He's 97th percentile for length while only 40th percentile for weight. When he's bundled up in his swaddling blankets, he looks like a little burrito with a lollipop head poking out, but when we change his diapers, he gets a chance to stretch out and cry out.
These are fun moments. Any sleeping people (or animals) in the house immediately awaken. Oftentimes, pee flies through the air. It's the one time, though, that you'll get to see him extend his entire body.
By the way, this shot is post diaper change.
This weekend was Aidan's first in his new home. We had several friends and family stop by to peek in on the new baby. The first family member to drop by was Aidan's cousin (technically, first cousin, once removed), Meredith. Meredith lives in Houston and made the drive into town for the weekend with her husband, Ben. She's a nurse who works with baby, so in addition to goo-ing and ga-ing over our little burrito, she also taught us effective ways to burp the child and swaddle him. To put her abilities into perspective, when she changed Aidan's diaper, Aidan didn't cry.
Yesterday was a beautiful day in Austin, but we were cooped up in a hospital room all day recovering from the trauma of childbirth. Luckily, some friends stopped by to say, "Hi," and others sent over gifts of congratulations.
We came home today. The flowers and cookies and gifts came with us. Our friends were so generous, we almost didn't have enough room for everything.
Mother is doing great. As rough as young Aidan's day was yesterday, Jess' was just as hard. She has spent most of the day teaching the baby how to feed and learning about how care for the child. We've seen pediatricians and lactation consultants and even a few friends.
Here's a quieter moment from last night, when momma was getting to know our new child.
This afternoon, Jess gave birth to a wonderful baby boy, Aidan Rowland. He came out at 7 pounds, 7 ounces, and measured 21.75 inches in length. His feet are 3.5 inches in length. He is active and alert and already has had two feedings from his new momma.
He's absolutely beautiful. Mother is perfectly healthy. The birth could not have gone any better.
Jess' sister Abby brought us one of our first baby gifts from China. it's a series of bells that hang down off notted string. Jess hung the bells above the baby's crib. When the bells move, they sound like a combination of rain falling and birds chirping. You can barely make out some of the intricate detailing on the bells themselves. It's tough to see, but the bells are each an animal head, with the mouth the slit of the bell. The larger ones at the bottom have eyes that bulb out from surface of the bell, which leads me to believe the animals are frogs.
Our new baby is due any time now, and we recently finished setting up its room. This picture shows where the baby will be sleeping. Hanging above the bed are Aunt Abby's bells, and in the mirror, you can see Jess' grandmother's Peter Rabbit paintings hanging above the sitting area.
