"When I think about Mary, I think about the Magnificat, the Canticle of Mary. And I think about the first lines, 'My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.' And that for me is the calling for everybody, to bow down before Jesus. And Mary brings that to me and makes it real for me."

"Our Lady for me, she’s the one who led me to meet Jesus, and she’s the one who really gave me the grace to know Him and to pray to Him and to follow Him. And still every day I open my heart and her heart, so she can bring me, with all my brothers and sisters, my community, to know God and His Son, Jesus, and to worship them; and to be her Son, as she is an example for us. So for me, Mary is the street to Jesus, the most sure one and the best one and the most swift street to go to Jesus. Thank you, Mary."

"For me Mary is the model of how to live and act as a Christian. And if I'm not sure what to do sometimes, I think of Mary and how she would act or behave. And I also think Mary is the real example of knowing how to lose: she lost Jesus her son, a lot of her life was about losing. And so I often think of that too - trying to lose thoughts or whatever, in order to be filled with God; so losing so that we find again God in our lives. That's Mary."

"Our Lady has always been very special to me, I suppose because my mother had such a very deep devotion towards her. When I was little she was like a mother to me and as I've grown older, I can so identify with her and her sufferings with Jesus. She is just a wonderful inspiration and when I think of her as a young girl accepting that, it's just mind-boggling."

An outdoor painting of the Annunciation, I thnk. The figure on the left seems to be Mary and on the right is an angel. If I'm right, he's Gabriel.

I'm guessing this because so amny of the public religious art is about Mary, but the set up of this is a little weird, with the light beam coming from the angel's hand. And Mary seems to be reading or something, so this could be a different angelic encounter.

Apparently the roman emperor Tiberius had a villa here and the 16th century orthodox Church of our Lady, Kassiopi, was built on the site of a roman temple where Nero himself is supposed to have sung. Today, the church houses some of the oldest icons on the island, going back as far as the 15th century.
