VIRTLANTIS is a free resource and open community of practice for language learners and teachers in the virtual world of Second Life®. We offer free informal language learning activities for a growing number of languages including English, French, Spanish, German, Chinese, etc. All of our activities are offered free of charge by volunteer language teachers and/or native speakers.
Everyone is welcome to offer a language activity at VIRTLANTIS. We provide free resources and ongoing support. We also collaborate with and promote other language communities in Second Life.
In addition to our main island and the various social meeting points at Knowingly, we have additional locations which can be used when needed.

Blended learning certainly *could* happen here. Note the digital projector which, if Internet access is available, the instructor can use to display content from the online portion of the course (e.g., assignment instructions, an exemplary discussion posting, one of the readings from a web source, etc.). Also note the student computers which students can use, if Internet connected, to interact with the components being displayed by the instructor.
Whether blended learning *does* happen here depends upon the design of the course and the actions of the instructor and students.
Students were asked to express matters important to them using clay, issues concerning deforestation, gender imbalance and extinction were explored in the first of this weeks short burst taster sessions in a variety of different techniques demonstrated during skills week.
It is entirely possible that this student sitting outside a classroom with her computer is actually interacting with her classmates or instructor in a blended learning course. She may be reading/writing a discussion posting, email message, or blog posting/comment. Or she may be engaged in a video conference session with a classmate or instructor.
We don't actually know without asking her, but this might be blended interaction.

There are many different advantages and disadvantages to blended education, traditional education and online education but in order to be effective they all need quality teachers, engaging lesson plans, understandable standards, and good feedback.

Experiences around piloting the model and framework revealed that practitioners were often at a loss as to what a design might ‘look’ like, and discussions tended to be esoteric and scattered. It was suggested therefore that teams draw up a mindmap that identified the main functionality and design of the programme or session they had chosen. However, some teams found this a challenge, so a mindmap 'model' (http://docs.google.com/View?id=dcqj5jv4_131d2686rhf) was developed. The online mindmap is adaptable, and users are encouraged to change it to suit their purposes.
The range of spaces, activities, tasks and interactions illustrated in the mindmap is extensive. However, rather than expecting that all will be used simultaneously, users are guided to select the items and tools carefully, and to ‘mix and match’ to suit circumstances and to change or omit any elements that are irrelevant or unsuitable. Although the central starting point of the mindmap is labelled ‘course’ it could just as easily be a Community of Practice, a department, or a support unit.
The mindmap has been piloted with virtual community space design (see, for example, Te Hononga Maori Architecture Studio - moodle.unitec.ac.nz/course/view.php?id=136), as well as with other educaiton programmes and activities. Anecdotal feedback to date suggests that teams thought it was a great help to 'see' their design, and visualise all of the disparate but interconnected elements. It was also a great springboard for discussions about the pedagogical reasons for including elements such as, for example, informal, social spaces.
