New findings on prostate cancer may enable doctors to make better diagnoses and prognoses for patients and provide novel directions for therapies, according to a new study from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) Network. Most prostate cancers are detected early while still confined to the prostate, a walnut-sized gland located below the bladder. While most cases remain harmless - benign - for decades, other subtypes of prostate cancers can be aggressive, and spread to other parts of the body (metastasize), making them extremely difficult to treat. It is currently difficult for healthcare providers to distinguish which cancers will remain harmless and which will metastasize.

On March 9, 1977, FDA announced that a scientific study had found a weak link between rats consuming saccharin and bladder cancer and proposed to remove the artificial sweetener from the market. The announcement unleashed a storm of criticism and agency officials were caught off guard. FDA learned the hard way that a public that feared cancer more than any disease, nonetheless appeared to fear the loss of diet foods even more. Congress soon intervened, prohibiting a ban, but imposing labeling requirements on the ingredient.

There are other carcinogens that railroad workers may have been exposed to that may also explain cancers developed by those who work on locomotives, including creosote and other chemical solvents.
There is evidence that creosote may cause skin cancer and cancer of the scrotum. Chemical solvents may cause chronic toxic encephalopathy and other brain diseases.
Railroad companies who were responsible for providing a safe work environment may be in violation of the Federal Employers Liability Act (FELA).
A railroad worker who was diagnosed with cancer may think the cancer was because of his or her family history or another explanation, when it may be because of hazardous chemicals you were exposed to on the job. FELA allows employees who worked in such unsafe environments to seek financial compensation, and such lawsuits do not require out-of-pocket costs on the part of the railroad worker.
