This seems to be a common spider around Shawnee Mission Lake. They spin their large, beautiful webs over the paths at the edge of the woods, often having to start from scratch each night because of human-spider web collisions. (The spider web never wins.) I'm not nearly as knowledgeable about invertebrates as I'd like to be, and I haven't had time to track down the specific identity of this one. If anyone happens to know it, please send me a note. Thanks!

Ammodramus henslowii.
This was one of several males apparently singing on territory in the same field. I located one of its favorite perches and just sat down near it and waited. The bird was so tame that it came closer than I could focus (less than 15 ft) several times. The cocked tail in this image is the result of a strong gust of wind, not the bird's normal posture.

Western Tanager, Boise, Idaho
one evening, a couple of years ago, I stepped out of my kitchen door and encountered this bird about three feet away. It didn't fly off. I retreated back in the house, got my camera, set it up and went back outside hoping the bird was still nearby...it hadn't moved! I managed to get nine exposures before it moved away. Below is the first one. I have posted a couple of the others here before.
