Endemic to the Colombian rain forest with a lifespan of up to around 14 years in the wild and around 24 years in captivity. During the late 1960's as many as 30.000 Cotton-Top-Tamarins were taken from the wild and exported to the US where they were used for biomedical research. With large habitat destruction the Cotton-Top-Tamarin is at risk with as little as 6000 individuals left in the wild.

Abstract:
Image caption on page 96 of the book US National Library of Medicine: "The Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) vocabulary was quickly adopted by medical libraries for cataloging their own collections. MEDLARS - the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System - was an equally significant accomplishment for the library. Establishing an online version of the system as MEDLINE (MEDLARS Online), in the early 1970s, opened it up to more medical librarians around the country, and later to the world. Together MeSH and MEDLINE proved to be invaluable tools for medical research. By the 1970s, staff members of the library and in medical libraries around the country were entering MeSH vocabulary into networked MEDLINE computer terminals to find relevant journal articles to answer patron inquiries both onsite and remotely. Indexers required in-depth knowledge in a wide variety of disciplines. Staff members might be called upon to review literature from any branch of science or medicine, and they often kept at their desks reference copies of textbooks, medical dictionaries, and foreign language dictionaries."

One of the first steps in drug development and toxicity testing is creating test systems (assays) to evaluate the effects of chemical compounds on cellular, molecular or biochemical processes of interest. Investigators from the biomedical research community submit ideas for assays to National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences researchers, who then assist with high-throughput small molecule screening using a robotic system.

A scaffold was shaped over a mold, attached to mesh, and seeded with stem cells. After 38 days in culture, the stem cells had grown to create a smooth, glistening surface. This process may lead to treatments for hip osteoarthritis that avoid the need for extensive hip replacement surgery.

The Intramural Research Program (IRP) is the nation's biomedical research enterprise, with 1,200
Principal Investigators and more than 4,000 postdoctoral fellows conducting basic, translational,
and clinical research. To ensure that only the most outstanding research is funded, IRP researchers are
evaluated both on accomplishments since their last review and on proposed plans for future research.

BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH: NIH Should Publicly Report More Information about the Licensing of Its Intellectual Property
Notes: The effective periods of the 32 licenses ranged from 7 to 31 years. The figure does not reflect three licenses associated with drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before NIH granted those licenses.
ᵃA single license can be associated with multiple products and vice versa.

Researchers study the giant squid axon to bring fundamental understanding on how nerve fibers transmit signals. NIH researchers such as Dr. Kenneth Cole, Dr. Tasaki, and many others who worked on axon research at Woods Hole, Massachusetts. In this photograph, the researcher appears to be examining the fibers for detailed research.
ACT UP planned events across the United States to raise awareness of the impact of biomedical research for HIV/AIDS. At the National Institutes of Health ACT UP called a demonstration to "Storm the NIH" to bring awareness of the biomedical research for the disease.
