A mushroom is the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus, typically produced above ground on soil or on its food source.

The standard for the name "mushroom" is the cultivated white button mushroom, Agaricus bisporus; hence the word "mushroom" is most often applied to those fungi (Basidiomycota, Agaricomycetes) that have a stem (stipe), a cap (pileus), and gills (lamellae, sing. lamella) on the underside of the cap. Back with more of "Where the Wild Lights Are" from the end of last year, this one was really insane, a concoction of traffic lights, cars, trucks, street lamps; everything at every conceivable angle and there's more madness to follow.

The name came from that blue streak in the centre, that looks like a sperm cell with lens flare, so hence there conjured the perspective of being within the uterus environment, along the birth canal that gave this a sense of, or an imagination of, a bioluminescent adoption in an artificial landscape of technology, lights as well as the synthetic and engineered apparatus, concluding with the time of the exposure and lens motion, creates in light, what one can do when seeing things in cloud formations.

Rays of morning sun made this bunch of Mycena roseoflava on a fallen tree irresistable to photograph. The small fungus gains nutrients from decaying organic matter and breaks it down into its composites.

M. roseoflava stands at a height of 5-10 millimeters (0.2 to 0.4 inch) and an equal width. The relatively short stem is slightly swollen at the stem base.

In 2021, the species was discovered to be bioluminescent, this never having been recorded previously. Fungi lovers and mycologists have been organising a yearly Fungal Foray in New Zealand for the last 25 years or so. Apart from checking out their daily finds with microscopes in the evening, they also wander around the forest at night finding bioluminescent fungi. Focus stacked image.

He once had a dream of stars, dancing upon a rippled water's surface. Black waves crashed against a dark shoreline and the rhythmic waves were the only thing to be heard. It was calm and peaceful. Slowly he made his way into the ocean, the waves welcomed him like an old friend as he dove into the cool water. Deep down, where there was no light from the moon. However, it wasn't dark. Ready to make his way back to the surface to catch his breath, he realized that a swarm of jellyfish covered the entire surface like a huge cloud. While his air was running thin, he tried to find another way out, but there was none.

He remembered the dream so clear like a memory. Just like the persons response to his story.

"I will come and save you from the jellyfish", they said.

So he waited patiently by the jellyfish, for them to come and find him.

The fireflies of the Southeastern U.S. have been something I've looked forward viewing on warm summer nights for many years.

I suppose it's a thought that has struck most of us at one time or another of what it would be like to fly like a bird. With a grin, the thought came to mind, what would it be like to glow when I wanted to? I guess we really do glow all the time. Just not in wavelengths that our eyes can naturally see it in.

Spent the day going through some old shots and transferring them to my many large hard drives :-). Came across this image which was 1 of only 2 that I managed to capture the Bioluminescent sea in any great colour or detail. So, had a dabble with editing it and thought I would add it to the collection :-)

Throughout the galaxy the probes appeared. Their purpose and origins are unknown.

Well headed out in search of some stars again but never expected to come across Bioluminescent Algae in full glow. Was possibly the mos amazing thing ive seen in a long time. Was like someone firing a flash off in the waves every time a wave broke on the shore. Took literally hundreds of picks at various exposures to try and capture this. This was probably my best attempt in the end :-)

One of the three bioluminescent fungi found in western Pennsylvania. The glow is localized to the gill area and requires a time exposure to bring out the details. These fungi are active from late summer through early fall especially after periods of rain. The mushrooms are best located in daylight and brought indoors to photograph in a controlled environment.

"Armillaria tabescens is a species of fungus in the family Physalacriaceae. It is a plant pathogen. The mycelium of the fungus is bioluminescent. Armillaria species infect a wide variety of woody plants. The species can be cooked and eaten, even being regarded as choice, but has been reported to cause upset stomachs." [iNaturalist.org] Found on the verge of 40-acre Lake, Brazos Bend State Park, Needville, Texas.

After a number of attempts we still managed to capture this phenomenon. This photo was also taken on the coast of Cadzand-Bad after a hot june-day .

The ocean can glow and glitter like the stars in the sky thanks to a natural chemical process known as bioluminescence, which allows living things to produce light in their body.

Marine creatures like some fish, squid, tiny crustaceans and algae produce bioluminescence to either confuse predators, attract prey or even lure potential mates.

We humans can witness this natural phenomenon when there is lots of bioluminescence in the water, usually from an algae bloom of plankton. The bioluminescent sea will glow when it’s disturbed by a wave breaking or a splash in the water at night.

Algae bloom sea sparkle events are caused by calm and warm sea conditions. But you can see specks of bioluminescence when it’s created nearby by a light-producing marine creature.

I'm not sure if this is bioluminescent. It seemed to be quite bright in the very low light I was in. Sorry I don't have an ID.

My co-worker Liz found this remarkable glowing bug crawling around in her back yard last night. Thankfully, she picked it up and brought it to work today to see if I could tell her what it was. Don't those bioluminescent lights resemble a passenger train passing by at night?

Tor Bay, south Wales last night had an amazing display of bioluminescent plankton, this was about 3am as the tide was coming in!

This flower with its bioluminescent appearance was found at Hollis Gardens in Lakeland, Florida. They have no name plaques in most of their beds so I have not an inkling what this flower's name is.

(EXPLORE) I went on a really cool night kayak tour one evening in Paquera. I met the couple running the tours at their "outdoor" home before we got started. (See pics below)

I was told to look up and check out their gecko feeders.......isn't that great?! The bugs come to the light and the gecko's have a continuous buffet. :D

I went hunting for bioluminescent Ghost Fungi in the forest near Brisbane last night. I didn't find any Ghost Fungi, but I did spot this beautiful little Sugar Glider (Petaurus breviceps)! This was the first time I've seen one in the wild :)

Wikipedia: Mycena haematopus, commonly known as the bleeding fairy helmet, the burgundydrop bonnet, or the bleeding Mycena, is a species of fungus in the family Mycenaceae, of the order Agaricales.

The fruit bodies of M. haematopus have caps that are up to 4 cm (1+5⁄8 in) wide, whitish gills, and a thin, fragile reddish-brown stem with thick coarse hairs at the base. They are characterized by their reddish color, the scalloped cap edges, and the dark red latex they "bleed" when cut or broken. Both the fruit bodies and the mycelia are weakly bioluminescent.

It is widespread and common in Europe and North America. It is saprotrophic—meaning that it obtains nutrients by consuming decomposing organic matter—and the fruit bodies appear in small groups or clusters on the decaying logs, trunks, and stumps of deciduous trees, particularly beech. The edibility of the species is not known definitively. It produces various unique alkaloid pigments.

Viewing the peak of the synchronous fireflies in the Elkmont region of the Great Smoky Mountains is one of those magical events that you will never forget. It's like being in the middle of natures rave.
