Saluting a pioneer in the field of systems biology, the Michael Savageau Collegiate Professorship in the Department of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics was established with Brian Athey, Ph.D., installed as its first professor on Dec. 4, 2013. Savegeau, Ph.D., had the vision and dedication to make the department a reality in 2012. Athey, the first chair of the department, is a leader in biomedical informatics and computational medicine, and he has made key contributions in research, clinical translation and education. Athey is also a professor of computational medicine and bioinformatics, a professor of psychiatry and a professor of internal medicine.

One of the best parts of the BioArtography program, Santiago Schnell believes, is its ability to engage the public. "It's something quite unique," he says with a smile. Schnell, D.Phil., is interim chair of the Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology, the John A. Jacquez Collegiate Professor of Physiology, and professor of computational medicine and bioinformatics.
