A rainforest is an area of tall, mostly evergreen trees and a high amount of rainfall. Rainforests are Earth’s oldest living ecosystems, with some surviving in their present form for at least 70 million years. They are incredibly diverse and complex, home to more than half of the world’s plant and animal species—even though they cover just 6% of Earth’s surface. This makes rainforests astoundingly dense with flora and fauna. Rainforests’ rich biodiversity is incredibly important to our well-being and the well-being of our planet.

Small open-air museum placed in El Bruc (L' Anoia, Catalonia)
The purpose of the project not only will help keep birds but they will also publicize the territory using an attractive and artistic way.
Community people reconverted scarecrows into "estimaocells" and in its construction they included nest boxes and bird feeders.
The main aim of this community project is improving and restoring the biodiversity in the territory.
A beautiful barbet endemic to the Malabar region of India. This is a vast global biodiversity hotspot from the tip of South India and spans most of the western coast.
The barbet is spectacularly rich in colors and absolutely amazing to look at. These are endemic to the Malabar region. They are small birds, maybe about 11-13 cms and just like Coppersmith Barbets - another common barbet found much of India.
Shot this picture in a forest camp situated right in the middle of a very active area. This tree was right above our room and the nest is exactly on the underside of the branch below the birds tail (a small inverted hollow). The birds have nested almost a month in advance as per the highly experienced bird guide in that place. The chicks are out and the bird was actively getting food every 30 mins. Just like other birds, it would check the surroundings for prey before it gets into the nest.
This was shot around noon when the bird was most active, so the light was a bit harsh.
Thanks in advance for your views and feedback. Much appreciated.
another shot from one of my favourite places, the 'Two Water' mangrove forest in Krabi.
Quite a unique little biosphere, where at high tide saltwater from the Andaman Sea and fresh water from the mountain forests mix in a small stream. The constant exchange of nutrients combined with shelter from the mangrove trees create an ideal nursery for everything that thrives in this climate. An incredibly rich little biodiversity hotspot, besides providing a visual spectacle.
Please feel free to check my Thailand album for some other views from this same place published previously, e.g. a close up of a tree reflected and one of the magnificent palms that grow in the surrounding wetlands.

In many cultures, vultures are symbols of renewal and purification.
By clearing the environment of the remains of dead animals, they play a vital role in the ecosystem.
Their majestic flight is not only a sight to behold, but also a reminder of the importance of biodiversity and healthy ecosystems.
In short, the flight of vultures is a marvel of nature that illustrates the extent to which these birds are adapted to their environment and essential to the ecological balance.

The hillsides below Salt River Summit, Wyoming support a mix of environments. The open spaces covered with arrowleaf balsamroot are across from hills of sagebrush and grass. There are also huge aspen groves and a lodgepole pine forest. There is a lot for photographers to enjoy during the brief spring wildflower season.
Samburu National Reserve has some unique species. Its zebra's marks do not close at the belly, or at the butt, unlike those at other reserves a hundred miles away in Kenya or other places. (Check the other 2 in the series)
This is not a great shot in terms of detail, but I post it because it shows the great biodiversity of the brazilian Pantanal. Only in a small pond like this one, we can see, at least, nine bird species, beyond the capybaras, and the water was an authentic caiman soup! See large, if you can :)

The Naturalis Biodiversitycenter in Leiden (NL) is a national museum of natural history and a research center on biodiversity. This is the museum entrance hall which provides a unique overview and access to all the different floor levels. The look and feel of the architecture breathes biological discovery. Personally it reminds me of my teenage years when I searched and collected fossils. Very eyecatching from the inside and outside is the elliptical window pattern.
A male small skipper photographed during a biodiversity survey of the proposed extension to Chester Zoo Nature Reserve.
I was trying hard (but unsuccessfully) to find an Essex skipper during the survey as these have now been reported in the area. It's not easy as the distinguishing features (antenna club underside colour plus for males the size and orientation of the sex brand) are far from obvious in the field. Photographing every butterfly on the site may be the only answer! This is one of the easier cases with large sex brand that isn't parallel to the wing edge and the antenna club underside is clearly orange.

As we rebound from our recent "tiny false winter", a brief glimpse of how October usually looks. Sagebrush, willow, goldenrod, and wild licorice are among the many plants visible in this small patch of wild prairie. A tripod allowed me to stop the wide angle lens down for maximum depth of field, and the overcast day softened the colours. There's an old saying among photographers that remains good advice: "If the sky is white, crop it tight." (Not a "rule"; merely a suggestion...) In this situation, I decided to crop it out entirely.
An old deer trail leads past this spot, up into the hills. The modern prairie is mostly fenced off with barbed wire, and very little of it remains in its natural state. Monoculture is where the money is at. We see endless fields of wheat, mustard, flax, oats, barley, chick peas, canola. Pesticides are applied generously. Biodiversity falls apart. In this place, beyond the limits of my framing, there are no fences. The wild prairie goes on and on for miles.

Every year I produce composite images showing invertebrates visiting ivy in our garden. This is the third for 2023. Ivy flowers are such a great resource for invertebrates at this time of year.
En tiempos complejos, ya sea escuchar el sonido del agua o mirar sus vaivenes, son un verdadero regalo para el espíritu.
A French paper wasp, a masked bee and three common red soldier beetles feeding on a small part of a wild fennel flower growing on a Mahon roadside. This contrasts markedly with the large number of wild flowers resulting from our council's no-mow policy. These are virtually pollinator free, which tells me that lack of food isn't the main problem faced by insects in the UK. I fear a feature I saw recently about pet flea treatments and other potent insecticides getting into the environment may have more to do with it.
