Hydrangea, commonly named hortensia, is a genus of flowering plants.

They can be either deciduous or evergreen, though the widely cultivated temperate species are all deciduous.

Hydrangea flowers are produced from early spring to late autumn; they grow in flowerheads (corymbs or panicles) most often at the ends of the stems. Typically the flowerheads contain two types of flowers: small non-showy fertile flowers in the interior of the flowerhead, and large, sterile showy flowers with large colorful sepals.

This one in my sister-in-law's garden caught my eye - I had never seen hydrangea flowers quite so purple before.

Rejection:

On 29 May 2025, the administrator for the Flickr group "Flowers/blossoms in blue - Blumen/Blüten In blau" rejected this photo for NOT displaying a blue flower. Alas, poor BLUE hydrangea, backlit by reflected golden sunlight! With no recourse for appeal (the administrator had disabled discussion), I left the group.

Bigleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla)

One of Kath's Hydrangea plant has bloomed in blue. A bit of a mystery as the other Hydrangea plants around it are all pink. So the Ph level of the soil must not be the only variable that influences colour

I’d like all of those things, but I don’t need them. Because what I get from photographing is learning. I have spent my life learning by looking through a lens :-)

Hydrangeas are available in pink, purple, blue, white, and green across several species. Some species change color based on the pH in the soil. Acidic soils will lead some to turn blue, while an alkaline soil will cause your Hydrangeas to bloom pink. Others remain white for most of the season, and several also bloom green for a while before fading to other common colors.

The flowers on the bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) is pretty familiar-looking, but when you get in real close on them - they look a bit different. I think the veins on the petals here look extremely pretty.

Oh ain't this lovely, a big blue hydrangea with water droplets - woohoo !

People love hydrangeas for their giant cluster flowers that grace gardens and bouquets around the world, but there's much more to these classic, romantic shrubs than meets the eye.

Oh my buddha - Blue hydrangeas symbolize frigidity and apology - sorry, not today, for either.

The colours of hydrangeas are affected by aluminum ions in the soil (lower pH higher acid required).

In Victorian times, giving someone a hydrangea could mean one of two things: Thank you for understanding, or – because its blooms are considered showy – boastfulness and vanity. Talk about sending someone a mixed messages - this is so confusing.

Are you looking to give a loved one a gift to tell them you are grateful for their understanding? Now that you’re armed with these cool hydrangea facts, look no further than a beautiful Bouquet of hydrangeas!

Hydrangeas are extremely poisonous. The compounds in the leaves release cyanide when eaten, so keep the plant away from small children or pets, but feel free to feed lots to your enemies.

Hydrangeas produce the main flower clusters from the tips of shoots formed from the previous season.

Apparently, they are Madonna's least favorite flower. OK I will go with who the hell is Madonna - just kidding.

People love hydrangeas so much they have ave there own holiday, Hydrangea Day celebrated on January fifth, which, weirdly and ironically enough when the flowers are out of season in northern climes.
