Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW) built 29 of these 3,000horsepower C630C's and M's for the Canadian Pacific in August 1968, using the ALCO 251 prime mover. Here, CP 4504 trails out of Milwaukee on a Chicago bound freight. These big MLW's graced the "new" CP for a short time before being retired from the roster in the early 90's. Not long after this photo was taken, the CP 4504 was sold to Engine System Development Centre in Lachine QC as a test cell locomotive (ESDC 1). I have no further information on it's fate.

Erie Lackawanna caboose 380 glides westward through Galion, Ohio. The train is passing Big Four Depot, first served by the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railway and the New York Central Railroad.

The beautifully restored brick and wood structure can be found today at 127 Washington Street at Harding Way. It was one of two railroad stations in the city, the other served by the Erie Railroad.

The depot opened for business in 1900, and served as the Big Four division headquarters. Passenger trains departed northeast for Cleveland, southwest for Indianapolis, St. Louis, and south for Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati. Peak usage occurred during and after World War I, with 32 trains per day stopping at Big Four.

There's a big broadleaf maple like the one in the background here behind our house. I couldn't guess its dimensions, but it is enormous. Technically it is in our neighbor's yard, but since it towers over and is much older than all of us it's more like we belong to it, a feeling I particularly experience in the fall, when it creates the most epic cleanup responsibilities. We often hear barred owls in it at night. Somehow we have never laid eyes on them, but I expect it is just a matter of time. We see all other kinds of daytime birds in it, of course. Cooper's hawks like to hunt in it and it is a popular place for racoons to spend the day before raiding our pond at night. All of the other very big trees nearby are firs, and I think the combination of evergreen and deciduous habitat, as well as the nearby greenbelt and wetlands, all play a role in the extraordinary suburban birding around here. This is from the owl family down the bicycle path. Barred owl, Olympia, WA.

I wish this artist had thought of a more inspiring name for his beautiful sculpture!

A bright and sunny afternoon near Big Sur California

Big ole male gator swimming up to us in some very black water in a canal in the Florida Everglades. The monochrome look of the shot is as taken, this is not a B&W shot.

Happy Friday! Here's a little waterfall shot from Big Creek in the Great Smoky Mountains. This was the first waterfall I found while hiking upstream. Big Creek was my favorite spot in the Great Smokies. It had some of the best fall color and we only saw 3 or 4 other people all day. To get a slow shutter speed, I used a polarizer, ISO 50, and f/20.

That whole house is devoted to karaoke - and actually Big Echo is a brand name that you will see all over the Tokyo (and I would hazard a guess that they are quite popular outside of that city too). There are a lot of karaoke places as such, and Big Echo is the biggest one. They are owned by the Daiichi Kosho Company (founded in 1973 - which specialises in karaoke equipment).

I'm not sure exactly which beach this is.

I think it's Clam Beach from looking at Google Maps. We were on our way up to Trinidad and I just had to get out of the car and photograph the sky, which was quite dramatic.
