Bilad Sayt village, in 1995, still retained its traditional charm and sense of rural solitude. A labyrinth of narrow pathways connected these atmosphere dwellings. A superb square tower, in ruin, standed on top of the hill overlooking Bilad Sayt.
A verdant swathe of date palms and a patchwork of terraced fields accentuated the scenic beauty of this natural setting. All around are the impressive profiles of mountains that are a part of the Jebal Shams range. From somewhere deep within these mountains emerged crystal streams of water that eventually fed the village's two main falaj. These nurtured the area's lush heritage of date palm gardens and farms below.
Adding to the village's rustic charm was the sight of farmers tending lush fields of alfalfa, and womenfolk returning from the mountain springs with pots of fresh water gingerly balanced on their heads. In summer, men from the village set out early every morning to scour the nearby mountains for the bhoot tree that produces a type of sweet, purple-colored berry.
Whenever we were passing by in this village, and many others, we were always invited to share some dates, fresh fruits and some tea with the welcoming families.
After 14 years that we have not returned, one wonders how the modern times may have changed the people and the environment in this remote area?

I met Mr Akilendra Mishraji by cosmic accident , karmic curiosity , and I was to dress him as Ravan, for Rumi Jafry Nitin Manmohans film Gali Gali Main Chor Hai.. I met him during Ramzan so I could not partake of his hospitality and so after Ramzan my wife and I visited him his family and broke bread with him..
And Akhilendra Mishraji touched me instantly , his word of praise to me was Firozebhai your Ravan jewelry is the best I ever wore even in the Ramayana serial.. and out of silence I dare not tell him that my own soul lives in the essence of the jewelery I wear..as a Dam Madar Sufi Malang Ali Haq..

Jackie Shroff (born 1 February 1960)[1] is an Indian actor. He has been in the industry for more than 28 years and has appeared in over 150 films.
Jaikishen was born in the Gujarati-speaking Shroff family on February 1, 1960.[1] His dad's name is Arvind Chandrababu, his brother's is Hemant, and they live in Bandra, Mumbai in a bungalow named 'Babu Pad".
A vegetarian, Jaikishen made his acting debut in a bit-role as a villain in the 1973 hit 'Heera Panna' which starred Dev Anand. He then went on to act in another Dev Anand starer, 'Swami Dada".
It was Subhash Ghai, who signed him up for the 1983 hit 'Hero' that catapulted this handsome young man to stardom, followed by yet another hit 'Andar Bahar' with Anil Kapoor as his co-star. Thus Jaikishen became the new Indian legend: Jackie Shroff.
Since then there has been no looking back, as he went on to star in close to 150 movies with a career that spanned from 1973 onwards. Since 2000 or thereabouts he has appeared in a variety of character-roles, villain, comedian, and even as a ghost in 'Bhoot Unkle'.
He married his longtime girlfriend, Ayesha Dutt, who is also a producer and both husband and wife run Jackie Shroff Entertainment Limited. They have two children, a son, Jai (nickname Tiger Baby Babu), and a daughter, Krishna.

A plate of Naga Giant Peppers in a traditional Naga kitchen in Pharung village in Manipur, NE India. I thought these were the deadly Bhoot Jholokia peppers, believed to be the hottest peppers on the planet- well, the Reapers have subsequently been replaced by more even hotter specimens, but that's another story! Be that as it may, these are Naga Giant chilli peppers and they are positively lethal. A local told me these peppers were once in the Guiness book as the world’s hottest peppers. That was a revelation, as I had always thought that that dubious honour went to the Bhoot Jholokia or ghost pepper, which is rated very high on the Schovill scale and which I just mentioned above. Our host family eat these lethal condiments ike candy- not literally of course, but they make some of their dishes eye wateringly spicy- guaranteed to blow not just the roof of your mouth but actually your whole head off! This entire region of Manipur is known for their liberal use of these gastronomic killer chillies, so I cautiously tried a couple of tiny pinches of those chutneys and dips. All can say is, Ouch!
