Kassel

Here, the facade of the documenta hall reflects the Fridericianum Museum, which opened in 1779. From June to September 2025, the palm tree silhouettes of the white and green fabric pennants adorned the city of Kassel. “7000 Palm Trees” was an artistic intervention by Cosima von Bonin to mark the 70th anniversary of documenta (2025). Initiated by the Fridericianum, it was a humorous homage to Joseph Beuys’ “7000 Oaks” (documenta 7/1982).

Residents and institutions were invited to decorate the city to foster community and creativity. All the pennant chains had been distributed to the public within a week. The Fridericianum accompanied the project with workshops, performances, and concerts.

documenta Reflexionen

Graffiti, Düsseldorf-Flingern --- Am 12.5.2021 wäre Joseph Beuys 100 Jahre alt geworden. --- "Anyone who doesn't want to think gets kicked out." Joseph Beuys would have turned 100 on May 12, 2021.

Remembering Joseph Beuys (self-portrait with brushes). My wife's brushes, that is.

This young woman has just graduated from the Düsseldorf Academy of Art.The academy is pretty famous…Paul Klee was a professor there, Joseph Beuys was a professor there in the 1970s and Gerhardt Richter… amongst other well known artists, studied there…I took this shot, with the young woman’s permission at an exhibition of work collected by Mutter Ey after the first world war, she was a well known, much loved supporter of artists throughout her life.

"If you want to express yourself you must present something tangible. But after a while this has only the function of a historic document. Objects aren't very important any more. I want to get to the origin of matter, to the thought behind it." Joseph Beuys, 1969. Ignore the Exif data, this shot was done with the Helios 44M-7 wide-open.

Museum Castle Moyland, Bedburg-Hau, Germany

---

The castle building today houses the art collection of the brothers Hans and Franz Joseph van der Grinten. The comprehensive collection contains exhibits from the 19th and 20th centuries, including works by Erwin Heerich, Willem den Ouden, Rudolf Schoofs and Hermann Teuber. One of the main focus of the collection is the collection of nearly 5000 works by Joseph Beuys, the largest collection of works in the world.

In this experiment, which some might call a spiritual exercise, the attempt is made at transferring bioenergy from an onion via an accumulator and, then, an accelerator, to a person. Evidence of transfer must not be 'anecdotal' but repeatable and statistically corroborated. This is the reason why I should be careful when talking about 'evidence'. There is a second caveat of a more ethical nature. In this experiment, the direction of energy transfer is from onion to man. This is purely for scientific reasons. The aim of the whole exercise, once formally established, is to transfer life energy from one person to another (transfer of merit, spiritually speaking). Exercises of this kind have been done before. The two ones I would like to mention specifically, are Joseph Beuys' action "Manresa" and Wilhelm Reich's "Orgone Accumulator".

As found on a street in Bradford, West Yorkshire.

Moyland Castle (German: Schloss Moyland) is a moated castle in Bedburg-Hau in the district of Kleve, one of the most important neo-Gothic buildings in North Rhine-Westphalia. Its name derives from the Dutch word Mooiland which means "beautiful country". The name was probably coined by Dutch workers, whom the then-leaseholder Jacob van den Eger of the Lower Rhine brought to the property in 1307 to drain the surrounding wetlands.

The building is now primarily a museum devoted to exhibiting the world's largest collection of work by artist Joseph Beuys.

It is a popular destination on the Lower Rhine.

Equivalent in size, shape and colour, the two elements that constitute the Capri Battery remain in perfect equilibrium, suggesting that a balance might be struck in modern life between the finite capacities of nature and the needs of technological development.

after Joseph Beuys

I'd wanted very much to revisit the Museum for Natural History but it was solidly booked the entire week of our stay. Tickets for the Museum of Contemporary Art, though, were easy to get. So we were sated by a huge exhibition to honor Joseph Beuys (1921-1986), the initiator of the highly influential art movement 'Fluxus', perhaps noted to the general public most for his performance 'How to explain pictures to a dead hare' (1965).

The huge museum is at least as notable for its neo-classical architecture. It was built 1846-7 as the main trainstation of the Berlin-Hamburg run. Used as such only until 1884, it was restyled to a museum for building and transport in 1906. Surviving WWII more or less intact, it is now devoted to contemporary art.

In the photo you can see an oval piece of park just in front; it's an ecological work of natural art. There I saw Mouse-ear Hawkweed - often regarded a weed - visited by a pretty marvelous Pantaloon Bee: just regard the pollinated leg. Who needs the natural history of e.g. taxidermy after that?

a joke !

Reiner Ruthenbeck

His sculptures combined two things: statement and material. Ruthenbeck was concerned with tranquillity, although the first impression seemed to be quite different. His materials came from everyday life, which initially created a relative familiarity.

The examination of his - partly minimalist - art and the connection to ash, glass, wood, paper and metals, for example, leads to the essentials. What initially seemed unspectacular was an event.

This is what the Schütte Pavilion is all about:

The exhibition curated by Dieter Schwarz commemorates him as an important artist who came to the attention of the Maison de la Culture d'Amiens and the Serpentine Galleries, among others, which first presented him in England a year ago.

Reiner Ruthenbeck trained as a photographer before turning to sculpture. His photographs in the exhibition Living with Art in the Museum Kunstpalast, curated by Kay Heymer, told of this.

His sculptural works had previously been shown, for example, in WESTKUNST (curated by Kasper König) and in the German Pavilion at the Venice Biennale with Joseph Beuys and Jochen Gerz (curated by Klaus Gallwitz).

Ruthenbeck's works were among the exhibits at Documenta 5 (Harald Szeemann), 6 (Manfred Schneckenburger), 7 (Rudi Fuchs) and IX (Jan Hoet) as well as at Skulptur.Projekte Münster (1987 and 1997) (Kasper König).

Harald Szeemann's "When attitudes become" remains unforgotten - he was also represented there. And of course the artist was also present in "from here" (curator Kasper König).

The exhibition in the Skulpturenhalle offers the opportunity to admire his work.

Reiner Ruthenbeck

In the left top corner: portraits of Joseph Beuys by Andy Warhol

The myth of Dutch Light. Joseph Beuys postulated his theory in the late 1970s. He said that the light for which Holland was famous had lost its unique radiance, thereby acknowledging not only that it had disappeared, but that it had actually existed in the first place. The idea was astonishing. Beuys put it down to land reclamation in the Zuyder Zee in the mid-1950s [after which the Zuyder Zee was called the IJsselmeer]. And that, he maintained, marked the end of a visual culture dating back to the 17th century. Beuys described the Zuyder Zee as a vast mirror of light, calling it the eye of Holland. And he concluded that by draining it to create polders, the Dutch had ended up blinding themselves.

These objects were created by Anatol Herzfeld, a sculptor artist who has his atelier on the area of Museumsinsel Hombroich. He was a disciple of the famous artist Joseph Beuys.
