Seit über 50 Jahren starten und landen hier Segelflugzeuge. Mit über 120 Mitgliedern ist der HVL einer der größten Segelflugvereine Deutschlands und mit seiner Erstgründung 1908 auch einer der ältesten.
The first Autumn trip of the season occurred this weekend just in time for my 32nd birthday. I'd been combing over instagram posts in surrounding areas looking for the first pops of color. I found a new pass we'd never been to called Guanella Pass. I couldn't have asked for a better birthday present. I packed up our first jug of cider for the season, apples, summer sausage and cheese as well as turkey breast, romaine leaves, avocado and tomatoes for lunch. It was absolutely a glorious day! So many beautiful roads to weave through lined with the beautiful colors of changing Aspens. Avi my youngest who is 6 months old, was in awe as I held him up under the tinkling gold leaves - his first Autumn experience! 22 miles of road literally took us all day because you know me, this calls for an all day experience haha! We made so many stops - I soaked in every minute of it! What a great way to start off another year... I am truly blessed to have such lovely and awe-inspiring areas so close to visit and enjoy. Here's to another amazing Autumn season fellow friends!

This was one of my biggest targets in TX and it didn't disappoint in the slightest. He was cute as ever and looks similar to the Northern Pygmy-Owls we have here. The only difference is they don't have spotted sides and they have a streaked crown instead of a spotted one, like the Northern. I went to King's Ranch specifically to see this bird and took the 9 hour Norias bird tour led by Jim Sinclair. I cannot recommend this tour enough, it is 145$ per person but worth every penny. A major highlight of my trip. This is one of the few places you can see the rare Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Tropical Parula and Audubon's Oriole with a high success rate. Here I was lucky to see all 3! Other good birds here were: White-tailed Hawk, Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet, Wilson's Plover, Dickcissel, Swainson's Hawks, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, many conspicuous Botteri's and Cassin's Sparrows, over 20 Grasshopper Sparrows, Upland Sandpipers and other shorebirds, Greater Roadrunners,Crested Caracaras, Harris's Hawks and a Barn Owl. The only bird we dipped on was Sprague's Pipits but I have seen many of these in the Canadian Prairies, so I wasn't too put out.
I had many great days on my trip from watching the endangered Attwater's Prairie-Chicken dance on the lek to seeing millions of bats come out of a cave.
This day spent at King's Ranch, ranks up there in the best day category, of my 3 weeks in Texas. Big thank you to my friend Paul Prappas for suggesting it.
