Leaving B.H. station, city bound. Or maybe just to Summit. I think some of these short trains just go back and forth.

Continuing effort to start conversations and eventually ask to take a portrait. This is not natural for me. This is an area in which I am trying to grow and become a little more comfortable.

At the pool I spotted this father swinging with his young son and it caught my eye. This particular time it was less about starting a conversation, and more about getting the image before the status changed. The young boy didn't know what to make of me. He had quite the concerned look. I did explain that the scene of them swinging looked very nice and asked if I could take a photo, to which he agreed. The first two were not very good due to the swinging motion (duh) and a slowly responsive autofocus. This one turned out well when they turned to address someone. I do like how the turned heads and arm posture mirror one another.

Train tracks and stream behind the house where I grew up. (Bad photo of the train). NJ Transit now, used to be Erie Lackawana. Gladstone branch. They had the oldest trains running on this line until maybe the early 80's. I remember seeing pieces of track that had dates from the 1910's on them. Some freight early on but almost all comuter trains now.

Revisiting old haunts. There used to be a switch here for a spur that served some industry. Sillcocks Miller Co., or something. Switch is long gone, although you can still make out where the spur went. Now it is a self-storage place.

The first of many train photos. I grew up with this line running behind the house, but have almost no photos of it. Kind of shame because the old Erie Lackawanna passenger equipment that they used for much of that time is considered classic now. So, I made up for it a little bit, and also realized that I still have a lot to learn about taking train photos. We even rode the train out to the end of the line later in the trip.

Oh, I think that one reason we didn't take many photos of the trains back here is that it isn't incredibly photogenic. I managed to get a few ok shots in better light that I'll upload later.

Red-tailed Hawk

Buteo jamaicensis

Governor LIvingston HS, Berkeley Heights, NJ

The last thing I expected when attending my niece's HS graduation last week was to be taking bird pictures! This hawk flew to the top of the telephone pole as I walked in and stayed there for about an hour watching the graduation. The amazing thing was that several hundred people walked right under the pole and the hawk could care less.

Some of the "old-timers" watching the graduation said that RT Hawks have been regular by the football field for 10 years. One guy even said that one flew inside the gym three years ago and had to be rescued by the Raptor Trust.

Scott's 47th Birthday, 25 year Service Party

Maybe 3 hours before the original plans. Flight got canceled so instead of going through DFW and getting into Newark at around 9:30pm, we landed at JFK at 4:30 and took 3 trains. Took 2.5hrs and cost about $80, but I would say it was still worth it, given that we were able to fly first class. Original flights also were first class, using FF miles.

We were traveling pretty light. The car seats were light, but kind of bulky. Just shorts and t-shirts otherwise. Packing for warm weather is pretty easy.
