Burg Grünwald near Munich is a high medieval castle of the 12th century.

The existing structure was mainly built in the late 15th century (renovation works carried out 1486–87 to celebrate the wedding of Albert IV, Duke of Bavaria with Kunigunde of Austria).

Large parts of the castle had to be removed during the 17th and 18th centuries, because the Isar river undermined the foundations.

The Spandau Citadel is one of the most important and best preserved fortresses of the High Renaissance in Europe. It is located northeast of Spandau's old town on the opposite bank of the Havel in Berlin's Haselhorst district and is a well-known attraction in Berlin's Spandau district. The core of the complex is a medieval castle, of which the keep and palace are still preserved. In the years 1559–1594, a state-of-the-art fortress was built around it. It's well worth a visit. I don't know why I only visited this beautiful place now. I didn't regret it.

Regenstein Castle in the northern Harz foreland is the ruin of a medieval rock castle near Blankenburg in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt.

Only ruins remain of the difficult to conquer castle complex from the High Middle Ages. Some rooms carved into the rock and remains of the keep have been preserved. The ruins are surrounded by the remains of the modern fortress.

The castle ruins are located in the Harz/Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park, just under 3 km north of Blankenburg and around 3.5 km east-southeast of Heimburg in the Heers forest area on the sandstone cliffs of the Regenstein (293.9 m above sea level), which rise steeply from the Harz foothills towers.

Rittersdorf Castle is mentioned for the first time in 1263.

The tower house with a height of 26 meter was built around 1300.

In 1550 a residence with two round towers was built.

The gate with the coat of arms dates from 1575.

Nowadays part of the castle is a restaurant , but it is also possible to marry here, as there is also a wedding room from the municipality.

==========================

Vaduz Castle (German : Schloß Vaduz) is the palace and official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein. The castle gave its name to the town of Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, which it overlooks from an adjacent hilltop.

The earliest mention of the castle can be found in the deed of the Count Rudolf von Werdenberg-Sargans for a sale to Ulrich von Matsch. The erstwhile owners - presumably also the builders - were the Counts of Werdenberg-Sargans. The Bergfried (12th century) and parts of the eastern side are the oldest.

The castle underwent a major restoration between 1905 and 1920, then again in the early 20s during the reign of Prince Johann II, and was expanded during the early 1930s by Prince Franz Joseph II. Since 1938, the castle has been the primary residence of Liechtenstein's Royal Family. The castle is not open to the public as the royal family still lives in the castle.

Kriebstein Castle – the Fairytale Castle on the Zschopau River

Perched high above the Zschopau River, Kriebstein Castle is one of Saxony’s most beautiful medieval fortresses. With its striking keep, winding gables, and picturesque setting in the river valley, it resembles a castle straight out of a fairytale. Built in the 14th century, the castle once served as both a residence and a stronghold and remains an impressive example of medieval architecture to this day.

Der Mond beleuchtet die Osterburg zu Weida.

Sargans Castle is a castle in the municipality of Sargans of the Canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland. It is a Swiss heritage site of national significance.

The castle was the seat of the counts of Werdenberg-Sargans in the 13th century. Since 1899, it has been run by the local church and now houses the Sarganserland museum.

Beginning in 982 the Sargans region was part of the lands of the Counts of Bregenz. In 1160, the male line of the Counts of Bregenz died out. Count palatine Hugo of Türbingen inherited most of their lands, through his wife Elisabeth.

His son, Hugo, inherited the Bregenz lands around Lake Constance, including Sargans. This Hugo, who adopted the name Montfort und Werdenberg built or expanded Sargans Castle before his death in 1228. Excavations around the oldest part of the castle show that there was an earlier fort or castle, but nothing is known about that building. Hugo built the large bergfried, expanded the walls to the west and may have built a palas on that side of the castle.

In the mid-13th century the Montfort und Werdenberg lands were divided between Hugo of Werdenberg-Heiligenberg and his brother Hartmann of Werdenberg-Sargans. Hartmann took up residence in the castle and probably expanded the palas. The castle was first mentioned in 1282. Over the following century the wealth and lands of the Counts of Werdenberg-Sargans were divided over and over again between descendants. By the last 14th century, Count Johann I ruled over a small and poor county under the Habsburgs. In the Battle of Näfels in 1388, the count commanded a wing of the Austrian army that was supposed to cross the Kerenzerberg Pass. However, when he saw the threatened destruction of the main Austrian army, he fled back over the pass. The cost of the war, as well as other expenses forced Johann I to sell the castle and village to Leopold of Austria.

Liechtenstein, officially the Principality of Liechtenstein is a German-speaking and doubly landlocked country and microstate located in the Alps between Austria and Switzerland. It is the sixth smallest nation worldwide. Liechtenstein is a semi-constitutional monarchy headed by the prince of Liechtenstein.

Vaduz Castle (German: Schloss Vaduz) is the palace and official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein. The castle gave its name to the town of Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, which it overlooks from an adjacent hilltop.

The former owners, who were presumably also the builders, were the counts of Werdenberg-Sargans. The bergfried (the keep, built in the 12th century) and parts of the eastern side are the oldest. The tower stands on a piece of ground that is 12 by 13 metres (39 by 43 feet) in area. At the ground floor, the tower walls have a thickness of up to 4 metres (13 feet). The original entrance lay at the courtyard side at a height of 11 metres (36 feet). The chapel of St. Anna was presumably built in the Middle Ages as well. The main altar is late-gothic. In the Swabian War of 1499, the castle was burned by the Swiss Confederacy. The western side was expanded by Count Kaspar von Hohenems (1613–1640).

The castle underwent a major restoration between 1904 and 1920, then again in the early 1920s during the reign of Prince Johann II, and was expanded during the early 1930s by Prince Franz Joseph II. Since 1938, the castle has been the primary residence of Liechtenstein's Princely Family. The castle is not open to the public as the princely family still lives in the castle.

The Marksburg is a castle above the town of Braubach in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is one of the principal sites of the Rhine Gorge UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fortress was used for protection rather than as a residence for royal families. It has a striking example of a bergfried designed as a butter-churn tower. Of the 40 hill castles between Bingen am Rhein and Koblenz the Marksburg was one of only two which had never been destroyed (the other being Maus Castle) and at least the only one that had never fallen into disrepair.

Saalfeld, Villa "Bergfried"

Saalfeld, villa "Bergfried"

The castle "Schloss Haus" was first mentioned in 1314. It follows the trend of the 11th century to build castles for the living of aristocrats. From this time, only the tower (Bergfried) survived. After the castle was badly damaged during the Thirty Years' War, the facility was expanded in the course of reconstruction in 1681 as a summer residence for monks.

Later, it belonged to the family of Thurn und Taxis. Now it is the private property of the family Weitzel.

Kobern-Gondorf boasts two castles but this is the most visible, the Oberburg which perches 200m above the village with steep stepped vineyards to the valley floor, to the left of this picture are the desolate ruins of the Niederburg destroyed in 1688 and sits 50m lower than the upper castle .

The Oberburg was built in the early 12th century over an existing Celtic hillfort and was held by the lords of Isenburg-Kobern until the middle of the 14th century.

When the last male heir to the fiefdom of Kobern died, it was sold to the Archbishop of Trier who neglected it and it fell into ruin.

Some minor stabilization was done in the early 20th century and in 1989 a cute little restaurant was built next to the bergfried, both castles are open to the public free of charge all year round.
