On, September 3, 1840, the political convention for the Democratic Whig was held in Wheeling, Virginia.

A growing industrial hub heavily visited by steamboats and stagecoaches, Wheeling was the third largest city in Virginia at the time, behind Richmond and Norfolk, with a population of 7,885 people.

On the Whig ticket were William Henry Harrison for president and John Tyler (VP), using the slogan "Tippacanoe and Tyler Too."

The convention was a huge event for Wheeling, with 18,000 people convening on Wheeling Hill to hear the speeches of the candidates. A banquet table featuring "cold beef, tongue, fowl, vegetable, bread, cheese, pies, barrels of ice water" was set up to feed the attendees.

Notable names on the broadside seen below include: Jacob S. Shriver, Thomas Brues, James H. White, O.W. Heiskell, Lewis Bayha, S.P. Hullihen, James E. Wharton, and B.F. Kelley.

Wharton was the editor and publisher of the Wheeling Times & Advertiser in which this broadside was found.

A prominent businessman, Shriver, was the father of Daniel Shriver, who, two decades later, would organize the Shriver Grays -- a Confederate Company of the 27th Virginia Infantry (Stonewall Jackson's regiment) in Wheeling. The Shriver holdings would be seized during the Civil War, even as the family fled to Louisiana, then Richmond.

Benjamin Franklin Kelley would go on to organize the 1st Virginia (Union) Infantry in Wheeling. He was appointed its colonel and was later promoted to brigadier general and assigned to guard the B&O at Harper's Ferry, commanding 10,000 soldiers.

A microcosm of the state of Virginia and the nation as a whole, the attendees of the Wheeling Whig convention of 1840 were split in their loyalties during the Civil War.

Meanwhile, Harrison was elected president, but died only 31 days into his term, becoming the first president to die in office and the shortest-serving president in U.S. History. (text based on the Lunch With Books program presented by C.J. Kaiser of Jan. 28, 2020) Broadside: , OCPL Archives

The artist who goes by the name Meat did a little more for me than Kelley's work. Meat's pieces were entirely of a character he's come to call "Beard", in slightly differing styles, from an almost R. Crumb feel to tender realism.

It's right on the river, and when it's summertime and the air is full of humidity and river smells, I think fondly on Memphis.

This is the view from Jesse and Mary's apartment just up the block from the Northwestern Building, which is the structure closest to the foreground on the right.

He seems like a tender bucket o' meat, this man called Meat.

I wasn't super impressed with Benjamin's work as the colour pallate was by and large a pastiche of my least favourite tones, but I quite liked this piece.

The view from Mary and Jesse's, further to the left. We don't get bluffs in Minneapolis. It's a damn shame I haven't explored the river in St Paul more.

A quaint little quartet.

I've always loved this piece Mary owns. I forget who did it for her...

Found metal objects, deerhide. LOVE IT.

Dude's got some trees and buildings growin' out 'im.

I only make it to my friends' events every few months, so there's always some major change when I arrive each time. This time, proper signage! This gallery has been in the works and has suffered a lot of growing pains, but I think in the past year they've absolutely come into their own and will start to get the attention they deserve for all their hard work.

I loved these windows in the little storage room Echo uses to house tables and food stores for openings.

Touching, charming and slightly terrifying all at once.
