Sometimes it’s easy to get carried away with our so-called accomplishments. We spend our lifetimes collecting achievements, earning praise and recognition, and seeking approval – so much so that we lose sight of what is truly meaningful.
If being peaceful and loving are your primary goals, then why not redefine your most meaningful accomplishments as being those that support and measure qualities such as kindness and happiness?
Rather than being consumed exclusively with external accomplishments, try putting more emphasis on what’s really important. When you redefine what it means to achieve a meaningful accomplishment, it helps you to stay on your path.

The ruins of Whitby Abbey are among the most celebrated sights of North Yorkshire. The first monastery here, founded in about 657.
Set high on the clifftops overlooking the sea, the ruins of Whitby Abbey tell only part of the site’s incredible story. Communities have lived on this headland for over 3,000 years and it has long been an important holy place and seat of power. Buried beneath the soaring arches we see today are the remains of an earlier Anglo-Saxon monastery, whose tales of saints, poets and miracles still survive.
From its early, pivotal role in the history of Christianity in England to the arrival of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Whitby is a place where history and legend meet. Explore this page to discover the stories from the headland’s past.
In AD 657 Abbess Hild founded a monastery for men and women at Whitby, on land given by King Oswiu. It was Whitby’s first monastic site and became one of the most important religious centres in the Anglo-Saxon world.
In 664 Whitby hosted a landmark meeting, known as a synod, to decide the date of Easter. By opting to follow the Roman Christian tradition rather than the Celtic one, it was crucial in determining the direction of the English church.
The monastery was abandoned following Danish raids in the 9th century but the Benedictine monk Reinfrid established a new community on the site in 1078.
The Benedictine monastery was suppressed by Henry VIII in 1539 and its ruins are the ones we see on Whitby headland today. The vast shell of the abbey church is a magnificent example of English Gothic architecture.
Whitby Abbey has inspired many artists and writers, including Cædmon, the first named poet in the English language, and Bram Stoker, who set part of Dracula here.
The back entrance to the compartment of an old Benedictine monastery. Who has already come in and gone out here? Who wants to know that! Curiosity? The monastery dates from the 12th century. In the meantime, however, it has been destroyed, changed and rebuilt. The current abbey is said to date essentially from the 18th century.
The monastery was founded in the middle of the 12th century. Since then there have been many changes, demolitions, reconstructions, etc. The current facility reflects the condition since the 18th century. A church-historical highlight is a Vitus shrine from the 13th century.

This is the hostel at New Norcia, which until recently operated as a hotel. Looking through the windows the bar and dining areas still look like an operating hotel. New Norcia is Australia's only monastic town which has an interesting if not sordid history, depending on who you listen to. That said it was certainly an interesting place to visit and explore, albeit very overcast and drizzly when we were there.
The church in the background belongs to a former Benedictine monastery. The monastery was founded in the middle of the 12th century. The church is said to date from the third quarter of the 12th century. The monastery was abandoned in the early 19th century, but the church is still in operation as a parish church to this day.

The Benedictine monastery was erected in this location from 1077 onwards. Following the Prussian cultural struggle towards the end of the 19th century, the monks were expelled. Services are still held at the monastery church, which is open to visitors.

Chester Cathedral is a Church of England cathedral and the mother church of the Diocese of Chester. It is located in the city of Chester, Cheshire, England. The cathedral, formerly the abbey church of a Benedictine monastery dedicated to Saint Werburgh, is dedicated to Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Since 1541, it has been the seat of the Bishop of Chester.
The cathedral is a Grade I listed building, and part of a heritage site that also includes the former monastic buildings to the north, which are also listed Grade I. The cathedral's construction dates from between 1093 and the early 16th century, having been modified a number of times throughout history, a typical characteristic of English cathedrals; however, the site itself may have been used for Christian worship since Roman times. All the major styles of English medieval architecture, from Norman to Perpendicular, are represented in the present building.
The cathedral and former monastic buildings were extensively restored during the 19th century (amidst some controversy), and a free standing bell tower was added in the 20th century. In addition to holding services for Christian worship, the buildings are a major tourist attraction in Chester and the cathedral is used as a venue for concerts and exhibitions.

It was daylight when I shot this photo, but I wanted to solely feature the stained glass windows and restored stained glass skylights, so I set the exposure compensation for darker. Another photographer there took similar shots with no compensations, and with the light streaming in, even through coloured glass, her photos looked washed out. To see the actual concrete structures supporting these stain glass features, please visit my Abbey Album, or do a search on Flickr or otherwise for the church. It's quite an incredible modern cathedral.
