Formed when the Colorado River looped around an impassable sandstone escarpment, Horseshoe Bend is a unique American icon and one of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area's popular attractions. Shot at the viewing deck when the late afternoon Sun colored the red canyon walls even more vivid. Did not have luxury to stay longer to shoot the sunset. Will definitely come back.
A 350 mile journey begins with one step.
Saturday night William McIntosh and I made some plans to head up to Julia Pfeiffer State Beach to photograph Keyhole Arch during the winter solstice. During the winter solstice the sun lines up through the arch and has produced some magical captures and is a popular destination for many photographers. The following morning Bill called at 7:30am and said that the weather had turned up north and we decided to head the other direction towards the southwest, After spending a half hour looking at the radar and Skyfire we decided to head to a spot 6 hours away just past Phoenix Arizona to the Salt River Bend.
As we traveled, the weather started clearing more and more and by the time we got on location the clouds almost cleared out of the sky completely but luckily as the sun dipped to the horizon we did catch some last minute color in the sky.
This is an 8 image panorama stitched together in Lightroom and in an effort of full disclosure, was unhappy with the size of the moon when shooting at 11mm so I had the presence of mind to grab the longest lens in my bag at the time, a 24-105mm and snapped a second shot of the moon and replaced the tiny moon in the original composition with the one shot with the longer lens. I know some people object to this but I'm trying to sell prints here people. LOL :)

Last stop on my long Fall 2022 road trip was the pass south through Yellowstone and the Grand Teton. Even though it was mid-morning, I still made the obligatory stop at Oxbow Bend. I'd already been astounded at the low water level of Jackson Lake. I asked at the Coulter Bay Visitor Center and the ranger said something about water being allocated to farming. The low level of the meandering Snake River was still a surprise. On the cool side, check the water fowl there on the exposed bank.
Explore a meandering, horseshoe-shaped section of the Colorado River known as Horseshoe Bend, must join tour to visit those areas. “Horseshoe bend and slot canyon tour” at sunset time, this section of horseshoe bend is the private area, getting there were like on the kind of “horse” wagon, up and down on the road, sunshine, raining, hail, sunshine... what a weather! Arrived another side of horseshoe bend, like that quiet feeling facing to spectacular desert landscape shaped by wind and water.
Horseshoe Bend is the intimate Grand Canyon experience. It overlooks one of the most spectacular views on the Colorado River. Went there four times at sunrise, sunset, cloudy day and sunshine day, the picture was taken in a cloudy day. The overlook is 4,200 feet (1,300 m) above sea level, and the Colorado River is at 3,200 feet (980 m) above sea level, making it a 1,000-foot (300 m) drop.
This is the wider 24mm view there in the early morning at Oxbow Bend. Will follow this post with a zoomed in capture taken at 105mm.
Another photo from our walk through Long Timber Woods at Ivybridge at the very southern tip of Dartmoor National Park. The arch in the background is a fallen tree which landed in this odd orientation. I took another photo further upstream with that tree as the main focus but the bend of the river here looked more interesting in the end.
I love to drive in the country in Autumn--I just can't wait to see what is around the bend!!! HOPE YOU ARE HAVING A GREAT WEEK SO FAR----I AM BUSY TODAY--CATCH YOU LATER--THANKS FOR TAKING TIME TO STOP IN!
Oxbow Bend is a "bend" or looping meander of the Snake River in Wyoming which has been cut off from the main channel. It resembles the oxbow used by the western pioneers.
Grand Teton National Park - Classic shot of Oxbow Bend at sunrise. When I first arrived at this location, the fog was so thick you couldn't even see Mt Moran. Luckily the fog part as the sun rose to reveal this beautiful scene!!

The Toledo bend is a large man-made body of water between Louisiana and Texas. The length of the lake is approximately 85 miles long. The lake has two purposes. Its an electric power plant and is capable to provide water to the city of Houston.
The lake is also a very popular with Bass sport fisherman.

Oxbow Bend is an overlook along highway 89/191 between Jackson Lake Junction and Moran Junction.
An oxbow is a crescent-shaped section of river lying alongside a flowing, winding river. The oxbow is created over time as erosion and deposits of soil change the river's course.
Oxbow Bend is home to a variety of birds and animals, including pelicans, Great Blue Herons, muskrats, otters, moose, and bear. On calm days, Mount Moran can be seen reflected on the surface of the water. Oxbow Bend is a popular area to view sunrise or sunset, and is visited by photographers hoping to capture the river and Teton Range.
I know I have not posted a picture for literally ages but as you all know, life can get busy. After 2 years of hiatus, traveling for work and conferences is back to almost pre-covid normal so I was finally able to go to a conference in Las Vegas. Knowing how close Grand Canyon is, I didnt miss the chance to drive there and visit this breathtaking natural wonder. More pictures of the Canyon will follow, with more detail about its size and vastness, but here is probably the most photographed spot of the Grand Canyon, the famous Horseshoe Bend in Page, AZ.
