Ben Franklin is in a festive mood this Christmas. This was shot at the Grange Estate in Havertown, Pa. It's a beautiful estate that dates back to 1682.

Our Ben Franklin tree (Franklinia alatamaha), that I had an opportunity to purchase this Spring, is blooming! We read they bloom in late Summer and it's had 4 buds for weeks. Today - the first 2 blossoms opened - yay!!!

THIS TREE IS EXTINCT IN THE WILD. A 2 to 3-acre patch was discovered in South Georgia in 1765 by John & Wm Bartram - along the Altamaha River. William later collected seeds and specimens - thankfully - because every tree known today originated with those seeds! They named it after family friend Benjamin Franklin. This species was never found anywhere else, and the last tree found there was in 1803. Few people have ever seen this tree - and fewer still have ever seen and smelled the blossoms. We are blessed!

This was sort of a five and dime plus arts and craft stores that existed throughout America primarily in small towns. They named it Ben Franklin after his famous saying "a penny saved is a penny earned", This location closed in 2018 and is located in Middlebury, Vermont. I'm glad I was able to capture a photo of it because who knows if they'll keep the signage or not.

The sun was getting low as we walked along the waterfront. I had taken a few shots of the Ben Franklin Bridge that crosses the Delaware River from Philadelphia, PA to Camden, NJ. and we were getting ready to leave. As we walked past this support the light seemed to be just right and I couldn't leave it alone. After a few shots, I knew this would be one of my favorites and it was.

I had to look up what the quote about "Sense being preferable to sound" on the statute base was referring to.

This is from Wikiepedia:

"It was hoped that Benjamin Franklin would donate a bell for a church steeple in the town, but donated 116 books instead, beginning a debate over who should be allowed access to these books. On November 20, 1790, it was decided that the volumes would be lent to the residents of Franklin for free via its library, which has been in operation since then. "

In a nutshell, they got books (sense) instead of a bell (sound). Now I know!

This vintage postcard was found at a estate sale. On the opposite side is a photo of Bucking Broncos at Fort Morgan, Co. I'm sure Mr. Case was thrilled to receive this postcard by mail in Baraboo Wi, the year was 1907. The lost art of the written word!

Happy birthday, Mr. Franklin. I think I would have been a great help in gathering information about electricity. You see... I have a clingy, sparkly personality. ~ Mine
