At West Tennessee State Penitentiary, offenders have the opportunity to engage in Art Therapy, sketching and designing murals, a few of which are pictured in the photo above, for their housing unit. Each mural theme has to meet two criteria established by the Mental Health Team—the framework must embody aspects of the impact visual art has on healing and depict the benefits of nature imagery.

This process, under the guidance of Corizon Health Recreational Therapist Cindy Thomas, allows offenders to utilize art as a form of mental health treatment. Evidence-based theories suggest Art Therapy targets treatment outcomes such as improving communication and expression, and increasing physical, emotional, cognitive and/or social functioning. We thank the Corizon Health team of Carolyn Johnson, Bradley Zahn, Cindy Thomas and Dorothy Nunn, for their outstanding work in treating offenders suffering from mental illness within the Tennessee Department of Correction.

The event was sponsored by Anderson-Watkins Insurance, The Corner Room, Gorham Savings Bank, Southern Maine Medical Center PrimeCare Physicians and Time4Printing.

Corizon Health’s Dr. Andrew J. Adler, Statewide Behavioral Health Clinical Director in our Tennessee Department of Correction Mental Health Partnership, recently was called up by the American Red Cross to assist with Houston’s recovery from Hurricane Harvey, which flooded that area of Texas.

Dr. Alder spent a week in September on “hot shot” assignments. These are teams of Emergency Medical Technicians, Licensed Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses and other healthcare professionals who visited neighborhoods impacted by the storm to perform simple health assessments, first aid and other basic medical tasks that become urgently important in desperate situations.

Although he observed some shelters shutting down in Houston, Dr. Adler reported, “The devastation was widespread and some areas of the city reveal street after street of gutted homes.”

In 1751, Benjamin Franklin led the legislature to pass an act "to encourage the establishment of a hospital for the insane." As a result, the Pennsylvania Hospital was constructed and, in the following year, opened its doors to provide care for a variety of patients, including the mentally ill in the community. Pennsylvania Hospital became the first hospital to treat people with mental illness in the colonies and was an important step in recognizing and offering care for mentally disabled persons as a distinct patient population.
