The construction of this building began approx 600, during the reign of the Visigoths, as the church of St.Vincent. This church bought from the Christians in the years 784-785 emir of Cordoba of the Umayyad dynasty, Abd ar-Rahman I (756-788) and built a mosque in its place. Mosque adjoined to palace of the Emir of Cordoba. Work on its construction began in the year 785. It was developed in stages over two centuries. Inside was created the forest about 850 columns. In 1236 Córdoba was recovered by Christians. At the beginning of the 16th century Emperor Charles V ordered to demolish part of the mosque was built and the church-cathedral, which, despite the large size, is lost in the forest of columns. The initiator of this idea, Emperor Charles V said about it later;

"Ruined something that was unique and have built something that can be seen everywhere."

Budowę obiektu rozpoczęto ok. 600 roku, za panowania Wizygotów, jako kościół pod wezwaniem św. Wincentego. Kościół ów odkupił od chrześcijan w latach 784-785 emir Kordoby z dynastii Umajjadów, Abd ar-Rahman I (756-788) i wybudował na jego miejscu meczet. Meczet przylegał do pałacu emira Kordowy. Prace przy jego budowie rozpoczęto w 785 r. Był etapami rozbudowywany przez dwa wieki. We wnętrzu stworzono las około 850 kolumn. W 1236 r. Kordoba została odzyskana przez chrześcijan. Na początku XVI wieku Cesarz Karol V kazał wyburzyć część meczetu i pobudowano kościół-katedrę, który mimo dużych rozmiarów, ginie w lesie kolumn. Inicjator tego pomysłu, Cesarz Karol V powiedział o niej później;

"zniszczyliście coś, co było jedyne w swoim rodzaju i zbudowaliście coś, co można zobaczyć wszędzie".

The Isola San Giorgio Maggiore has always intrigued me. It is definitely one of the iconic sights to see in Venice. The island has been occupied since 829 and the church, with its bell tower, was built in 1566. This was taken one morning as the sun began to rise over the beautiful historic city!!

I continue to be busy trying to lend support to a Presidential candidate here in the USA and getting ready for a new trip to India. Southern India will be my destination this time. I miss my daily contact with every one, but probably won't be back on schedule until sometime in March! I continue to appreciate your support and encouragement!!!

This landscape snap, crackled and popped as the ice on the lake began to melt.

" I began to feel the sand Of all the grains and pebbles, Only few could fit my hand Without fleeting away. Once again I sit At the crossroad of faith... To be consumed by the wind And disappear into the night. Oh how I longed For that night And the sky Hugging the land. Maybe we shall meet again, As the wind meets sand Flowing and waving In time... Construction of the belfry began in 1313. Since 1402, documents in which the city privileges have been registered (privileges granted to Ghent in 1180) have been stored here in a secret room.

The belfry also served as the observation tower. Until 1442 this role was played by the tower of the church of St. Nicholas. In 1442, the guard moved to the belfry. Until 1869 he was in charge of the city's security.

As I began the descent from Michael's Mount (Michaelsberg), just a short distance from my previous posting, this was the view across the valley to the next hill beyond. The four spires in the background are part of the Bamberg Cathedral up on Cathedral Hill (Domberg) above the city center in the Regnitz River valley. The buildings here are mostly ecclesiastical. There is a fairly steep climb down from here, part of it on winding stone stairs. [DSC01561_lr_2000]

Construction of the castle-abbey of Loarre began in the 11th century by order of Sancho III of Navarre. It was located on a promontory located about 27 km from the capital of Huesca as a way to control the southern plain, which was then in the hands of the Muslims and wanted to be reconquered by the Christians.

Built in Romanesque style, it is considered the best preserved in Europe within that architectural style. With the rank of National Monument, its declaration as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO is currently being processed.

As an anecdote, it is worth mentioning that some films have been shot there, the most famous being Kingdom of Heaven (2005), directed by Ridley Scott.

I began my road trip through Tunisia in Tunis and travelled west along the Mediterranean coast. Then my driver started South. I thought I was going to start seeing desert scenes. Silly me. I had not realized what fertile land there was in the northern part of Tunisia. Luckily it was spring tine where around every bend there was an Impressionist's landscape. Now, as I remember the trip, I am pleased that the trip was filled with little gifts of surprises.

I began to realize how important it was to be an enthusiast in life. If you're interested in something, no matter what it is, go at it fullspeed. Embrace it with both arms, hug it, love it and above all become passionate about it.

The photos I've posted over the past week are a continuation of a series I began on Cass County and City of Virginia in 2011. To view the complete series, click on my "Cass County, Illinois" album on the right.

Before leaving Virginia for our next Cass County destination, I am posting this photo which shows the north side of the Courthouse Square. With one exception, this is the least photographed and least interesting side of the Virginia square. The exception is the America's Cup Coffee wall art seen on the side of the two story, Italianate style brick building with a remodeled first-floor facade.

I first photographed this commercial wall art in 2015 (see photo in first comment below). In the six years between 2015 and 2021, someone thought it was a good idea to give the faded original and historic ghost sign a fresh coat of paint.

America's Cup Coffee brand was a product of the grocery wholesale company Oakford & Fahnestock in Peoria, Illinois. The brand is named after the America's Cup yacht race, and began to appear in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The wall art, shown below in my 2015 photo, appears to be original and, sadly, has now been "re-created" with the wall art seen above.

Virginia is the seat of Cass County in West Central Illinois. The population of Cass County and Virginia at the 2020 census was 13,042 for the county, and 1,372 for the county seat. Tomorrow we return to Beardstown, the largest city in Cass County.

I went out searching for thunderstorms that were supposed to be sweeping in across the area, but instead I found this incredible little valley. Clouds hanging low in the sky, fog rolling between the trees, the moody scene so to speak, and even in summer when the haze is thick I saw the drama, the promise that stretched out in front of me. I setup, and began adjusting, moving the camera back and forth. The area to shoot was narrow, but handy. I thought about zooming past the evergreens and focusing solely on the valley, but then I thought better of it. Using them as a framing device, letting them give a sense of depth to the scene without distracting overmuch from it. Then the wait was on, between gusts of wind, and the occasional rain rolling through, eventually I began seeing a scene worthy of showing off to my viewers.

As I began to photograph this shell, the tide began to cover it. I love how the water formed around it's shape.

As the streets began filling with life, I dodged my motorcycles and bounced my way over this part of West Bengal's rugged jagged roads. I walked slowly and observed in the quiet way that I do.

I walked along several streets, observing and experiencing the moment. And then I saw these street children, crouched on the sidewalk, quietly and asking for a 10 rupees note for some food. I gave them and asked them to pose for my photo....

On August 21, 1968, the occupation of the Czech Republic by Warsaw Pact troops began. This happened after changes began in this country, which could have been the beginning of democratic processes. Many people emigrated from the Czech Republic after this occupation. among them was also later Karel Kryl, a poet and singer. This song is his work of art and is one of the most famous Czech forbidden songs of the time: youtu.be/10PQf_Vhzmg

English translation:

Brother, don't cry, those are not bogeymen,

you're old enough now, those are just soldiers,

they came in square, iron caravans.

With tears in our eyes, we look at each other,

stay with me brother, I fear for you,

on winding roads, brother, in thin boots.

It's raining and it's gone dark outside,

this night will not be a short one.

The wolf hungers for the lamb,

brother, have you closed the door?

Brother, don't cry, don't waste your tears,

swallow your curses and save your strength,

you mustn't blame me if we don't arrive.

Learn the song, it's not that difficult,

lean on me brother, the road is shattered,

we'll stumble on, we can't go back anymore.

It's raining and it's gone dark outside,

this night will not be a short one.

The wolf hungers for the lamb,

brother, close the door! Close the door!

The little egret (Egretta garzetta) is a species of small heron in the family Ardeidae. It is a white bird with a slender black beak, long black legs and, in the western race, yellow feet. As an aquatic bird, it feeds in shallow water and on land, consuming a variety of small creatures. It breeds colonially, often with other species of water birds, making a platform nest of sticks in a tree, bush or reed bed. A clutch of three to five bluish-green eggs is laid and incubated by both parents for about three weeks. The young fledge at about six weeks of age.

Its breeding distribution is in wetlands in warm temperate to tropical parts of Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. A successful colonist, its range has gradually expanded north, with stable and self-sustaining populations now present in the United Kingdom.[2]

In warmer locations, most birds are permanent residents; northern populations, including many European birds, migrate to Africa and southern Asia to over-winter there. The birds may also wander north in late summer after the breeding season, and their tendency to disperse may have assisted in the recent expansion of the bird's range. At one time common in Western Europe, it was hunted extensively in the 19th century to provide plumes for the decoration of hats and became locally extinct in northwestern Europe and scarce in the south. Around 1950, conservation laws were introduced in southern Europe to protect the species and their numbers began to increase. By the beginning of the 21st century the bird was breeding again in France, the Netherlands, Ireland and Britain. Its range is continuing to expand westward, and the species has begun to colonise the New World; it was first seen in Barbados in 1954 and first bred there in 1994. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has assessed the bird's global conservation status as being of "least concern". source Wikipédia

The Parthenon:

The Parthenon is a temple on the Athenian Acropolis, dedicated to the goddess Athena. Its decorative sculptures are considered some of the high points of classical Greek art, and is considered an enduring symbol of Ancient Greece, democracy, and Western civilization.

The Parthenon dominates the hill of the Acropolis at Athens. It was built in the mid-5th century. The temple is generally considered to be the culmination of the development of the Doric order, the simplest of the three Classical Greek architectural orders.

The blue connection

The construction of the blue connection began in 2012 and continued until 2020.

It is a special connection between the South Park in Rotterdam , the landscape Buijtenland in Rhoon and Zuidpolder in Barendrecht , South Holland , the Netherlands .

It is a complete recreational navigable route to and at the same time functions as an ecological connection between the green areas in and around Rotterdam . The blue connection, also ensures clean water that comes from the Oude Maas and serves as a climate buffer .

A grand project , which is something different than the mega buildings major cities normally construct.

The blue connection is a recreational route for people with their canoes , small rowing boats and electric little boats and also is an attractive place for swimmers and fishermen. The shorelines are made as naturally as possible.

The plant and animal life to flourish will come through this connection. It's a matter of time before we can identify the beaver. There already live rabbits , bats , songbirds and waterfowl in the area. In addition to the herons , we can also find the spoonbill and they even hope that the bittern returns. Highland cattle is grazing in the Koedood , which is also a part of this structure .

The Pendrechtse Mill is a true photographic attraction in the Southern Border Park , the part of the connection between Rotterdam and Barendrecht . This is mainly because the sunset and sunrise, during a few weeks each year , are behind the mill

Areas to enjoy , photograph and just that piece of nature that we need in our overpopulated country.

Train Cemetery - Uyuni

In 1872 began the construction of the railway from Antofagasta to Bolivia, the first railway line in the country. It was used to transport raw materials such as sodium nitrate and other salts, but also metals such as copper, silver, and gold, from inland mines to port cities on the Pacific Ocean. When the railway reached Uyuni at the end of the 19th century, a railway depot was built in the town. Uyuni then became an important railway junction. Around the 1940s, the local industry collapsed and most of the precious metal mines were abandoned. As a result, the locomotives and railcars were no longer needed, were shut down and left abandoned.

There is a total of around 100 locomotives and carriages in the railway graveyard, the oldest of which date from the late 19th century.

With the battles finally over, work on temple construction began during the lunar month of February 1817. But the cost of construction was high and proper materials scarce. The Five Lords intervened again, visiting Madame Guo Feng of nearby Madou Village in a dream. Awaking, she took her palanquin to Nankunshen to deliver a personal donation of one thousand liang in silver – enough to keep work on the temple moving forward.

After five years and four months, work on the new temple was finished in 1822. It was at this time that the new home of the Five Lords was officially consecrated as ‘Nankunshen Daitian’ Temple. The original structure, built with the altars of the Five Lords at its center, was approached through a series of three main gates. An active center of worship for the next four decades, the temple gradually fell into disrepair. In 1864, Mssrs. Wu Kang, Hong Hu-pan and Tu Chian, three pious individuals from Keliao Village, together contributed 10,000 yuan for restoration work. In 1872, a new altar – ‘Ching Shan Temple’ - was added at the back, dedicated to the Guanyin Goddess to remember her role in mediating the dispute between the Five Lords and the child spirit.

A small group of us, led by Andy Cook, valiantly set off on the hike to Red Rock Falls. And then the rain began. And then got harder. And then the hail fell. Taking cover under a sparse tree I was soon find out that my new Shimoda backpack was up to the task. I couldn’t get to the rain cover without exposing the contents to drenching rain. Didn’t need to. Everything on the inside was dry. Had we not already made it relatively close to the falls I confirmed with Andy later that we would have turned back. But fortunately, on we went. It continued to rain, and hail a bit, but slacked off to a tolerable degree. Climbing around the rocks near the head of the falls wasn’t dangerous per se but to this sea level guy, still a bit nerve racking. But the views!!!! My microfiber cloth was already drenched and I didn’t know if the images would be ruined by rain drops on the lens, but everything turned out fine. This is my favorite image of the trip, enhanced greatly by the experience of getting it. It’s an HDR composite of 36 imaged taken from the top to the bottom of the falls in segments and then put together in Lightroom. (Thank you Adobe) (Sony a1, 16-35mm lens at 16mm, f/16, ISO 125 (which I’m sure I thought was on 100 at the time) and shutter speeds from 1/320 second to 1/5 of a second.)

I took the photo at the very top, although the mountain is not very high, the views from it in my opinion are very beautiful.

Goðafoss waterfall in Northern Iceland.

Arrived at Goðafoss in the late afternoon, a few clouds began to tear. Many visitors and quite a few photographers tried to capture this beautiful fall. It is certainly not the most spectacular or the most powerful of Iceland, but one of the most beautiful. Its harmony astonishes. Divided into two large arms and a small stream in the middle that crosses the basaltic rocks, it inspires peace by its undeniable elegance.

It was not possible to get too close to the fall, the huge clouds of water from the vapors settled on the filters. By their size of 150mm they were constantly envious of drops almost impossible to dry.

Hope to transport you in this atmosphere full of exitation with regard to such forces of nature and desire to make the best shot, thank you for all your comments and support.

The history of the “pinnacles” began about 7,700 years ago when the eruptions of Mt. Mazama were reaching their climax. Torrents of red-hot, gas-charged pumice poured down Mazama’s slopes at speeds of up to 100 mph (160 kph). On top of this came a flow of heavier rocks called scoria. These glowing avalanches flooded downslope for many miles, leaving deep deposits in their wake.

Temperatures in the deposits may have exceeded 750 degrees Fahrenheit (400 degrees Celsius). Plumes of vapors appeared, as gases escaped from the settling rocks through vents called fumaroles. Minerals in the gasses combined with extreme heat, welded the sides of the fumaroles in the shape of slender cones. Since then, streams have eroded the canyon through the deposits, exposing the cones. Many of these fossil fumaroles are hollow.

Heusden’s history began around the year 1200 with the establishment of an urban settlement beside the River Maas. Its heyday was the construction of the fortifications: from the end of the 16th century Heusden was a garrison town accommodating thousands of soldiers. Then, mostly as now, the town resembled the 17th century drawings made by the Amsterdam cartographer Joan Blaeu: a fortification surrounded by sturdy earthwork ramparts with bastions, moats and ravelins. The Second World War inflicted much damage and human suffering. Subsequently the town was fully restored, honouring Heusden with the highest European award, the ‘Europa Nostra’ prize for restoration. This charming town is certainly worth a visit. Wander through its picturesque streets and alleyways and discover numerous buildings dating back centuries. This historic setting is the home to galleries, speciality shops, friendly restaurants and pavement cafes. There are well-equipped harbours for tourists arriving by water and there are lovely views of the town, the river and the surrounding countryside from the ramparts.

This is a view of St Abbs as we began our coastal walk towards the lighthouse and back. The walk is about four miles and we were not in any rush. The coastline was quite rugged and it was misty with a slight drizzle. St Abbs is a National Nature Reserve and once again you can take your dog as long as it is on a lead.

Here's one from the archives. This is the first photograph I ever took on the Isle Of Skye. If I'm right then behind me is Loch Ainort. I think it is in that area anyway.

I began my drive around the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge just after sunrise. Cliff Swallows were everywhere. They build mud structures under bridges and culverts and live in large colonies; socializing, competing, scaping and just hanging out together. Here's one on his way back to the nest under a bridge, one carrying nesting material and one in a severe bank.

Gunnilaberg's construction began in the 1660s. The yellow main-building is built in carolina-style timber with walnut ceilings and has wall paintings from the later part of the 18th century. Gunillaberg is since 2008 owned by flower artist Tage Andersen. The farm has since 2009 been open to the public summer time as a garden park and a cultural center.

As the sun began setting on the horizon the warm tones began to mix with the still blue sky, the silhouette of the steeple and cross of the Newcastle United Methodist Church in Northern California. The main building of the present church was built in 1863 and there is one account that states some bricks from the original church built in 1820 where used in building the current church meaning that the congregation has the original church in fact not only spirit. - [x] #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotonewsletter @omsystem.cameras #excellent_america #omsystem @bheventspace @bhphoto @adorama @tamracphoto @kehcamera @mpbcom @tiffencompany #usaprimeshot #tamractales #omd #microfourthirds #micro43 @visitcalifornia

As I looked upon the squirrel in utter disbelief, he began to explain to me that the latest craze in staying slim and in top shape is to exercise while eating. Yes, apparently Californians have nothing on him with their stationary surfboards that are mounted on elaborate spring systems that move while you are trying to maintain your balance as you are doing your exercise routine on the board. He has taken it to a whole new level. To say the least, I was somewhat skeptical at first but then he took me thru his whole routine and I began to see the merit in this approach. I had actually wondered for some time how he managed to stay so slim while cleaning me out of my supply of peanuts. The benefits of this approach are obviously manifold, the one, being easy on your pocketbook while avoiding all those costs for fancy equipment and spa charges, immediately impressing me. There may be some setbacks to this such as doing your routine while in a restaurant trying to impress your date may cause some raised eyebrows and end the date prematurely. But as you play your favorite exercise song really loudly so that the rest of the patrons can get into the spirit of this slimness craze, you may be surprised (really surprised) at the reaction and results. So, here to help us get us into the spirit of moving is my favorite exercise song …

Staying Alive – Bee Gees

something began to stir within me, something began to push me, to prompt me. It was a movement that spoke like a voice. “What are you waiting for? . . . Why don’t you do it?”
