Panorama of Longyearbyen, the main town of Norway's Arctic Svalbard archipelago. The snow in the valley has largely melted away, which is somewhat unusual for early June. However, large patches are still present on the surrounding hills.

The air quality has been bad for weeks now, topping at 300 on the Air Quality Index so the government advised we start using respirators in-home now in addition to the mandatory filter systems put in place 18 months ago.
As much as I like the noodle truck floating by, the air is just too nasty and toxic to venture out so I'll stay put, heat up some ramen and only unmask for the nibbles.
Even with the air so toxic, the radio played this old Devo song and I couldn't resist thinking of better times.

Needle ice is a phenomenon that occurs when the temperature of the soil is above 0 °C (32 °F) and the surface temperature of the air is below 0 °C (32 °F). The subterranean liquid water is brought to the surface via capillary action, where it freezes and contributes to a growing needle-like ice column.
Alternate names for needle ice are "frost pillars" ("Säuleneis" in German), "frost column", "Kammeis" (a German term meaning "comb ice"), "Stängeleis" (another German term referring to the stem-like structures), "shimo bashira" (霜柱 the Japanese term for "ice needles"), or "pipkrake" (from Swedish pipa (tube) and krake (weak, fine), coined in 1907 by Henrik Hesselman),...
