Creative parking from a pilot? Nelson Ghost Town, with an airplane tail pointing the way to the midnight moon. I illuminated the scene with warm white light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light during the long exposure. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. Photographed during a night photography workshop that we taught in the Nevada desert. The title is one of my punny puns, as this reminds me of a sundial, but also, "mundial" is "world" in Spanish, so there's that. Fun with words. This will appear in my fourth book of night photography, history, and experiences.

Under Night's Inky Veil

Under dark cover of clouds, this shack at Rhyolite is still somehow standing, at least for now. I somehow found my way in the dark so I could illuminate the shack with warm white and teal light during the long exposure. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. I also love opportunities to shoot some light out windows. I photographed this after a really fun night photography workshop in Nevada.

The Curious Cobalt Kaleidoscope

I'm happy to share this image from one of my night photography desert safaris! This is a vintage 1924-25 Ford Motel T automobile that I discovered on my travels. I love the way the clouds frame the grille. I used a handheld light to illuminate the car and enhance its mystique during this long exposure photo. Warm white light and a couple of bursts of blue light on the headlight gives it an extra touch of intrigue and mystery. I hope you like it, thanks.

A vintage 1921 Buick Coupe and an old 1927 house originally built as the residence for the Superintendent of Maintenance along Route 66. Located on historic Route 66 at the Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association in Goffs, CA. Mojave Phone Booth

The "phone booth in the middle of nowhere". The original Mojave Phone Booth, as it came to be called, was originally set up in 1948 to provide telephone service to local volcanic cinder miners and others living in the area. This is a replica of that phone booth underneath the starry night sky, located along Route 66 at the Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association in Goffs, CA. I photographed this a week after it was installed. I illuminated the phone booth with warm light from a Wurkkos FC11 LED flashlight and green light from a ProtoMachines LED2 during the long exposure. Or maybe you're looking at photographic proof of an alien abduction. I'll let you make the call.

This was photographed while on a trip visiting my friend Lee in Atlanta and doing night photography with Tim while checking out locations for future night photography workshops. We photographed on a damp foggy December evening in Old Car City, filled with 4000 abandoned vintage vehicles in a forest dripping from rain earlier that evening.

Burning Star

A firetruck in Goffs, CA, bringin' some of the heat to this cold winter evening. I used some long exposure light painting techniques to capture this firetruck. This is located at the Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association on Route 66 in the Eastern Mojave Desert. The yellow color of the truck pops against the dark sky, and the details of the vehicle are illuminated in a unique way. Interesting mixed lighting with the BNSF railroad in back too. Here Comes the Grain Again

During a recent adventure to the Salton Sea, we stumbled upon a dark mysterious abandoned grain mill and storage tanks. I knew I had to capture the scene. To create this eerie image, I used a handheld flashlight to illuminate the scene in for a two-minute exposure while the camera's shutter was open. By doing this, I was able to bring out the texture and detail of the old buildings while also capturing the motion of the stars in the sky. It's a testament to the power of night photography to capture the beauty and mystery of the world around us. It's a reminder that even in the darkest of places, there is still light to be found, and that sometimes the most unexpected moments can be the most awe-inspiring. Step into the enigmatic world of the past with this night time view. You're looking at a magnificent head frame, ore bin, and hoisting house, reminiscent of an era long gone. Built in the early 1900s, this site holds the whispers of the hardy miners who toiled beneath the earth's surface. This is a night photo with light painting on a cold winter evening in the Arizona desert. These structures that look like concrete caterpillars were built for the manufacture of computers but never completed. Now, some speak of ritualistic witchcraft and Satanic worship. Regardless, domes at Casa Grande were torn down in January 2023. I illuminated the interior and exterior with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 during this long exposure image. This was part of a three-night trip with night photographer Mike Cooper, exploring the remote corners of the desert. NOTE: These domes were razed in January 2023.

The Final Frontier

What's part of historic Route 66 has the most intriguing history? You might agree that Ella's Frontier along Route 66 in Arizona is up there. This place was formerly known as the Frontier Trading Post, the last business of Frederick "San Diego" Rawson. Born in 1861, he apparently spent two years of his childhood held captive by the Plains Indians before being rescued by the U.S. Cavalry. That's not all. He also was a prospector, circus clown and trainer, emcee, wagon freighter, Indian scout, trapper, and cowboy. He opened a museum of his collection along Route 66 before moving to a small log building and opening up his trading post. Eventually, Ella Blackwell Meany owned and operated this place from the 1950s until her passing in 1984. She had attended the Julliard School of Music and kept an upright piano in the trading post. There's some debate as to who built the place. Two sources believe that it was built by Mormon pioneers in 1873, and claimed that it was the oldest trading post on Route 66. This may be a tall tale, but it sure is a fascinating one regardless. The Ella's Frontier sign was removed from the top of the building in 2019. The building unfortunately collapsed after that. This is how it looked in February 2022, with traffic on I-40 zooming past. I illuminated the exterior with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 during the exposure. This was part of a three-night trip with night photographer Mike Cooper, exploring the remote corners of the desert.

Bootlegger Run

Vehicles such as this 1921 Buick Coupe were used to run booze out of the East Mojave into the towns in Arizona and California during Prohibition. The large trunk could accommodate a holding tank, while the large engine could give bootleggers some extra horsepower for clean getaways. Belmont After Dark

Stepping back into history, it's challenging not to be in awe of the Belmont Courthouse, standing proudly as a testament to the silver rush era of central Nevada. Built in 1876, this architectural gem witnessed the influx of prospectors seeking their fortune in the nearby silver mines. As the mines eventually closed their doors, people stripped roofs for their valuable timber. However, the Belmont Courthouse was mercifully an exception. The Courthouse is being painstakingly restored by Friends of the Belmont Courthouse. As a bonus, there are several hundred signatures on the interior walls. Eerily, one of the names carved on the wall says Charles Manson. For fun, I left the camera in Bulb Mode for the amount of time it took me to walk down to the Courthouse, bathe the Courthouse in the warm glow of my handheld light, light painting the interior of each room as well as the exterior, then walking back up the road to my camera to turn it off. That was 9 minutes and 16 seconds, the longest single exposure star trails I've done in years (my longest ever is 36 minutes). The moon came out during my exposure, so the star trails are very faint. Oh well. I photographed this after a really fun night photography workshop in Nevada.

Running on Empty

I don't know how many times you've run low on gas in the middle of nowhere. If you have, you know how stressful that can be. This is a night photo of an abandoned Buick and a gas can. What happened here? This is located in a very remote mining camp, the desert floor dark due to black basalt lava flows. Illuminated during the exposure by a full moon and a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device. A beautiful quiet night for photography.

In the Belly of the Whale

Night selfie with light painting on a cold winter evening in seemingly post-apocalyptic remains in the Arizona desert. These structures that look like concrete caterpillars were built for the manufacture of computers but never completed. Now, some speak of ritualistic witchcraft and Satanic worship. Regardless, the domes at Casa Grande were torn down in January 2023. I illuminated the interior and exterior with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 during this long exposure image. This was part of a three-night trip with night photographer Mike Cooper, exploring the remote corners of the desert.

I illuminated this moss-covered vintage 1956 Packard Clipper with warm white light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light while the camera's shutter was open during this long exposure night photo. This was photographed while on a trip visiting my friend Lee in Atlanta and doing night photography with Tim while checking out locations for future night photography workshops. We photographed on a damp foggy December evening in Old Car City, filled with 4000 abandoned vintage vehicles in a forest dripping from rain earlier that evening. We will be having a night photography workshop here October 2023.

The Milky Way over Trona Pinnacles, CA on a very hot August evening. The pinnacles are tufas left from an ancient lake bed. I used a ProtoMachines LED2 to illuminate the tufas during the exposure.
