Bear on the Russian/Finnish border

This yearling black bear from last summer had just been kicked out by mom a week or two before this shot. Here he's running full speed to get away from his adoring fans. People were actually being fairly restrained and respectful of him, but the world looks extra scary the first time you're facing it all by yourself.

A Bear at "Tierpark Tripsdrill".

The rare and elusive ' BearBird sits on his perch in a tree deep in the forest quite as a mouse. Seldom seen this was a lucky capture.

These siblings where feeding on juicy native plants at Cayambe-Coca reserve in Ecuador.

I will be leading another tour in that wonderful country next year.

My "Jewels of Ecuador" photo tour is not just about birds but also mammals, landscape and its culture.

The name black bear is not a very accurate name for this species of bear. They can come in many colors such as black, brown, gray, silvery-blue, and cream. Most black bears are, in fact, black but often a black colored bear will have brown cubs and brown colored bears may have black cubs. The black bear’s habitats range from the far northern tundra of Canada and Alaska to the forests of Central America and Mexico

One of the polar bear cubs at Seaworld Queensland, it would be so nice to go back and see them again soon.No photos, it is pouring with rain that we need so bad, but it sure dampens the mood, so to the archives it is!

I spent the day at Bear Butte and stayed to witness the sunset. It was not as dramatic as I hoped, but still cast a nice pink glow over the area. This image was taken from a vantage point down one of those roads with "no outlet" posted and where you just may get high centered if you are not in a vehicle with a lot of clearance. The road I took was east of Bear Butte and was actually called "Gravel Road". This is near the infamous Buffalo Chip Campground and in August some 500 thousand bikers from all over the world will descend on the area for the 77th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Mato Paha or "Bear Mountain" is the Lakota name given to this site. To the Cheyenne, it is "Noahvose." This geological formation is one of several intrusions of igneous rock in the Black Hills that formed millions of years ago. The mountain is sacred to many American Indian tribes who come here to hold religious ceremonies. Please be respectful of worshippers and their religious practices.

Artifacts dating back 10,000 years have been found near Bear Butte. In more recent times, however, the Cheyenne and Lakota people have maintained a spiritual tie to this mountain.

Notable leaders including Red Cloud, Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull have all visited Bear Butte. These visits culminated with an 1857 gathering of many Indian nations to discuss the advancement of white settlers into the Black Hills.

George A. Custer, who led an expedition of 1,000 men into the region, camped near the mountain. Custer verified the rumors of gold in the Black Hills. Bear Butte then served as a landmark that helped guide the rush of invading prospectors and settlers into the region.

Happy Monday! Any of you feel like this on Monday mornings? Even though they look big, these are 2 sub-adult cubs hanging out with mom. Mom definitely needed the nap and eventually these 2 youngsters joined her.

This is a young black bear (about 1½ years) who would normally still be with her mother. We were hearing that Mom had been killed on the highway. So this little one was foraging for wild blueberries which were very plentiful under the very tall ferns. The only indication that there was a bear in the field was the ferns moving...until the little bear stood up!!!

This one is dedicated to CarenPolarBears ( www.flickr.com/photos/carenpolarbears/ ) for her love of these endangered bears.

Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska | October | Canon 5d3 | Canon 600 |

Captured this brown bear while traveling through Banff National Park in Canada. This bear was so intent in eating it never looked up to notice Mrs. Krach or I. It was quite intent on finding food.

I asked my wife to run past the bear to get its attention, but she was not being a 'good sport'.

One of the nice things of taking the car for the road trip, I was able to pack and have handy the Canon 60D that I still have and had the 70/200 lens attached ... allowing for this nice focal length. Was nice having it ready at any time needed.

It's amazing how the 300mm can get you close to a subject, surprisingly I took this from above behind bars but it looks like the little bear was just in front of me !
