A winters worth of marine litter is again ready to be bagged and removed from our shorelines. But there is less than there used to be. And sometimes we find lost buoys like this one that can be resold.
Demolition of a 75-foot long shrimp boat abandoned after it ran aground on the beach in Ventura, California.
The stern of the boat was so badly damaged, it would break apart and sink if they tried to tow it off the beach.
The owner reportedly told the authorities he could not afford to salvage the vessel.
So responsibility fell to the State Parks Department to demolish it and clean up the beach of debris.
Besides rope cuttings, bottle corks are one of the most often found sorts of marine litter on this stretch of coastline.
Taken as part of my environmental awareness project on beach litter and washed up plastics, this is one of many fish boxes that find their way on to our Cumbrian shorelines. With wildlife breeding season upon us, we all have a responsibility to keep our beaches clean from such rubbish. It's not enough anymore to just walk past expecting others to clean up instead - if you use the beach in anyway you have a responsibility to help protect it's natural environment. Next time you enjoy our beautiful British coast, make a point of collecting just one item of rubbish and disposing of it suitably, imagine if we all did just that...!

As part of our coastal cleanup project, Ren Kyst, we made this short film last year, showing the amount of work it takes to clean up our coastline. Even in this remote seabird reserve we found tons of marine litter.

Heal the Bay's 21st Annual Bring Back the Beach Benefit Dinner was held May 17th, 2012, at the Jonathan Beach Club in Santa Monica, California.
Today, my colleagues and I participated in the #BeachCleanup from Egmond to Castricum, along with >50 other volunteers. It was quite the challenge due to the heavy wind & rain, but we collected over 400kg of garbage with this 9km walk. Let this be a lesson to all of us and stop this #pollution πͺ #stichtingdenoordzee #noordzeetour (bij Strand van Castricum)
A normal composition of beach litter on this little beach, with the bonus of yet another Vaisala weather sonde, quite disintegrated. These used to be hardshell, not so easily broken down. Most of what we find here is fisheries related.

I have no idea how many of these I have found on beach cleanups. A thousand perhaps. From all around the world. This one is a product from Latvia, but they show up from South African, Chinese, Caribbean and European producers too. Unneccessary and avoidable marine litter.

One of the many pieces of litter I picked up on one of my regular beach walks/clean ups. Absolutely horrified at the amount of rubbish that ends up in our oceans.
Our national coastal cleanup day was today. More than 25.000 litter pickers has been hard at work cleaning our coastline. This work might seem futile, as it just keeps coming, but for raising awareness about marine litter, cleanups are quite effective.
Even on this lovely Remote Beach, plastic bottles from all Europe abound. Deposit schemes work. Get one going, please.
