The theme for this year is #BeBoldForChange to help forge a better working world - a more inclusive, gender equal world.

The above 22ft-high bronze sculpture memorial in Whitehall commemorates the key roles of women during World War II.

The sculpture, designed by the sculptor John Mills, depicts the uniforms and working clothes worn by women during the war and was unveiled by the Queen in 2005, marking 60 years since the end of the Second World War.

Women in Portugal, but like the rest of the world, had to fight hard to achieve a more participatory role in society. Formerly, the woman was seen as a simple domestic maid, irrelevant to what she thought was right or wrong, what mattered was man's obedience and pleasure. The woman had no right to education, to freedom of expression. Nowadays, after many struggles and achievements on the part of women, society is no longer so sexist, women having practically the same rights as men, despite the advances in the mentality of society, there continues to be discrimination: Woman in leading positions, disparity in relation to the remuneration of Woman compared to Man. In my opinion, policies and practices that aim at gender equality, condemnation of any kind of gender discrimination, and often the big problem that exists today is the fact that women do not support each other but rather To criticize one another, we must unite to show that we are worth as much as men and show the world that we also have something to say. WE CAN DO IT! #BeBoldForChange

"Are you a man who loves

And cherishes

And cares for me?

Is that you? Is that you?

Is that you? yeah,

Are you a guard in a prison

Maximum security?

Is that you? Is that you?

Is that you? yea eh,

Do we stay home all the time

Cause you want me to yourself?

Is that you? Is that you?

Is that you? yeah,

Or am I locked away

Out of fear that I'd find

Someone else

Is that you? Is that you?

Yea hey

Well, I don't like

Living under your spotlight

Just because you think

I might find somebody worthy

Oh, I don't like

Living under your spotlight

Baby, if you treat me right

You won't have to worry"

"Don't wish for it or hope for it. Do it. Because you can."

Beverly Burns. On July 18, 1984, during a transcontinental People Express (a short-lived budget airline that merged with Continental in 1987) flight from Newark to Los Angeles, Baltimore-born Beverly Burns went down in history as the first female pilot to command a Boeing 747. This game-changing feat garnered Burns the Amelia Earhart Award the following year.

.

In addition to her duties as captain, Burns, an erstwhile American Airlines flight attendant, also served as a baggage handler, gate agent, dispatcher and avionics trainer while with People Express. By the time she retired in 2008, Burns had logged a total 25,000 hours of flight time and had piloted not only the Boeing 747, but also the Boeing 757, Boeing 767, Boeing 777 and a variety of McDonnell-Douglas commercial aircraft.

.

The reason Burns became a commercial airline captain in the first place? Burns recounts, during her flight attendant days, a first officer explaining to the crew why there were no female pilots of commercial aircraft: He said, "Women are just not smart enough to do this job." She knew as soon as the words came out of his mouth - "women cannot be pilots" - that she wanted to be an airline captain immediately.

.

February 6th was designated as Beverly Burns Day in Baltimore by former Mayor Martin O'Malley back in 2002.

"The power and strength in women can make true change happen"

"Have confidence in your own ability"

There's been a ton of buzz about International Women's Day. I've even shared some of it in my newsletter. I've also been thinking a lot more about the meaning of the day. Here's how I see it. I think about the women I know - the ones that have impacted my life. Like my sister and her partner, that have created a life together, raising three kids, advancing careers, fighting for rights of numerous communities (including their own), and helping anyone that needs it. It's these women that are making a difference, and deserve the same rights, opportunities, and respect as anyone else in the world. This is how I see this day - a day for the women I know, and all of their friends, and their friends, and all other amazing women in the world, just like my sisters, who are just being themselves. This is why we celebrate.
