I joined Chris Dodds and some other great photographers at the Pond at Elephant Head to shoot some bats this past September. It's quite an experience. Despite technical difficulties that seemed to plague me, I still came away with some pictures I'm proud of. This bat was captured by setting your camera to take a picture every 10 seconds. A beam is set up across a small (read small "very" small") pond which triggers the flash as a bat crosses the beam. You end up with a lot of black images and some wonderful keepers. I'll post an example of the other set up which uses a flower the bats love and triggers for both camera and flash.

The canyon bat (Parastrellus hesperus), also known as the western pipistrelle, is the smallest bat species in the United States. Commonly found in Arizona, these bats inhabit arid regions, including deserts, canyons, rocky areas, and my backyard.
Just in case you've forgotten,,, Well, I've just found out that this was two days ago, while I visited their colony only yesterday. There is also The (more appropriate I guess) International Bat Night in August.
Anyway, I've chosen one shot (that does not require parental guidance) to mark this occasion.

4X-EDE, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, on approach to runway 24R at Toronto Pearson International Airport in Mississauga, Ontario. "BAT YAM" was arriving as ELY31 (EL AL Israel Airlines Ltd.) from Tel Aviv, Israel.
With recent rumours about the future fete of this beautiful 747-SP this photo shows 'BAT' just moments before a big rainstorm taxing back to its hangar after arriving late one Sunday afternoon. Photo taken at Bournemouth Hurn International Airport (BOH/EGHH) on the 15th February 2015.
This "beautiful" creature was photographed at The Pond at Elephant Head last year. The way it's done is to set up flashes aimed where the bat is hoped to come in for a drink. the pond itself is tiny, making the target reasonably small. The camera is set to take repeated photographs until the battery runs out and the flashes are set off by a motion trigger. This allows the photographers to enjoy a nice glass of wine or beer and swap stories watching the flashes go off a short distance away. Now that's photography at its best!

Each morning we were in Samburu, these guys could be relied upon to be soaking up the early morning sunlight outside their self-dug den.

Bat's Head is a chalk headland on the Dorset coast in southern England, located between Swyre Head and Durdle Door to the east, and Chaldon Hill and White Nothe to the west.
There is a small but very visible cave at the base of the headland known as Bat's Cave. A spectacular path, part of the South West Coast Path, runs along the coast through rolling green downland countryside to the north of Bat's Head.

Almost at the end of my walk up and down the reservoir, I looked up into the tall pines, always checking for Crossbills, when this appeared and somehow, with the Sigma, I managed to catch it :)
Spotted this guy out in the midday sun constantly diving and drinking from a small pond. Unfortunately it wasn't long before a Magpie also spotted it. RIP Long Eared Bat.

One evening, I was sitting on the deck watching the sun go down, when a HUGE bird flew into the palm trees in front of me. I jumped up to get a closer look and realized that it was a BAT hanging there! It stayed there a while, feeding on the palm berries/fruit/seeds. They are called Monkey Faced Fruit Bats. The pictures I took were not that great because it was super low light and I didn't want to mess with my settings and miss out on the photos.
