I come from the mountains, but I am always struck with awe with this view.

BASCO LIGHTHOUSE

It has served the people since 2003 and gives a 360-degree view of the Mt. Iraya, Basco town proper and the West Philippine sea. It is a 6-story building with the view deck on the fifth. To reach the view deck, one has to take 52 steps to the top.

Organic grass fed-beef, seaweed salad and fresh caught fish from the sea. This wasn't one of those fancy smanshy places it was what they had locally available. How yummy.

Trees are much like human beings and enjoy each other's company. Only a few love to be alone.

THE HOUSE OF DAKAY

It is said to be the oldest stone house existing in Batanes and is considered a UNESCO Heritage Building.

According to Ignacio and Alejandro (2005) A typical representation of an Ivatan heritage house is one made of stone, lime, and wood with a thatch roof made of cogon, structures resembling houses found in European hinterlands. They clearly demonstrate the effects of the harsh climatic conditions on the islands and the efforst of the Ivatans to adapt to the rigorous tropical environment. It tells a story of how the indigenous communities built compact and sturdy houses for protection against ravaging typhoons and the cold Siberian winds.

As Jude Defensor succinctly says in his blog (judefensor.wordpress.com/2012/04/26/at-the-end-of-the-arc...), the way most visitors to Batanes describe it, these far-flung islands seem to be a place that isn’t quite believable. It has gained a reputation as a land seemingly not of this world, part of some mythical realm, a peaceful pastoral haven in the middle of nowhere. If this were Middle Earth, in consideration of its peaceable folk, verdant landscape, and quaint, rounded, partially submerged architecture, Batanes would probably be the Shire. The smallest province in the entire country in terms of both population and land area, it is also known as the “Home Of The Winds” due to its legendarily stormy weather.

Batanes is a goup of three islands and can be characterized by spectacular sceneries with the blend of seas (3 channels), cliffs and mountains (a volcano at the far background included), valleys, rolling hills and rich grazing lands. Weather is more unpredictable than a woman, lol. .But what makes Batanes greater than its reputation as a landscape photographers' paradise is the pure value of its people, the Ivatans.

HOMORON BLUE LAGOON

It is also known as Spanish/Spaniard's Lagoon since during the colonial era, only the Spanish were allowed access to this area. After braving the steep rocky slopes, one may take a swim since it is now open to locals and tourists alike.

Batanes is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List as " one of the last remaining areas in the Philippines having unique natural physiographic features ( wave-cut cliffs, cave-like outcrops, secluded white beaches ) resulting from its position where strong winds and fast currents have etched out its distinct morphology "
