Lava flows formed into basaltic rock, ranging in composition among alkaline olivine basalt, olivine nephelinite, and basanite. This porous, igneous rock forms the basalt cliffs seen near Fort Selkirk.

Cliff-side outcropping of pillow basalt (extrusive volcanic rock) along the west side of the port facilities at Port San Luis, north end of San Luis Obispo Bay, between San Luis Obispo and Pismo Beach (Central Coast), California. Pillow basalts form during underwater volcanic eruptions (see Kilauea, Hawaii). These rocks are deep-water Franciscan, probably Jurassic-Cretaceous in age. This was a completely unexpected find for me so I only had my Iphone and the sun was in a bad position for photographing this, but it was such a spectacular outcrop that I had to grab some photos to share.
