These dark hexagonal basalt columns next to Svartifoss have inspired architects in the designs of the Hallgrímskirkja church and the National Theatre in Reykjavík.

It looks as if thousands of hexagonal and octagonal Lego blocks have been crammed together for a bizarre public art exhibit.

 

Giant's Causeway in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, is one of the weirdest of natural wonders - 40,000 basalt columns dating back to volcanic eruptions of prehistoric times, clumped together on the stormy north east irish coast.

s21675a. Massive, hard, dark, non-vesicular, fine-grained, uniform. Some weathering close to surface, some tendency towards vertical columnar fracturing.

When a lava flow cools rapidly, the rock contracts as it solidifies, leaving gaps in the rock which are often five or six-sided shapes. These polygons tend to form long vertical columns in the depth of the lava flow.

If you take the Geology Tour Road at Joshua Tree, as you get into the basin and turn right at the Berdoo road and come back around to the west, you'll get a nice view of the entire valley looking back up towards the main body of the park. You'll see this big hill on the left, which is called Malapai Hill. That hill is a giant mound of basalt. This is a geologist's paradise, I suppose, with granite, gneiss, marble, basalt and tons of other rocks and minerals
