A panoramic image, four images stitched together, of Iceland's unique columnar basalt. The geology of Iceland is spectacular since it sits atop the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and is such a new landmass.

Monolithic rock formation from lava flow. During the cooling of a thick lava flow, contractional joints or fractures form. If a flow cools relatively rapidly, significant contraction forces build up. While a flow can shrink in the vertical dimension without fracturing, it cannot easily accommodate shrinking in the horizontal direction unless cracks form. The extensive fracture network that develops results in the formation of columns.

This is a piece of rock that I found over there, its weight are quite a surprise for a basalt.

Would anyone wanna guess the weight? Here's the option:

A. 20 Kilogram

B. 2 Kilogram

C. 20 Gram

D. 2 Milligram

Gerduberg basalt columns. Iceland

This rock is a basalt lava collected from the Moon during the Apollo 12 mission. It is thought to be composed of dense crystals that settled to the bottom of a ponded lava flow, as the flow cooled and crystallized. The largest crystals near the center in red, purple, and blue are olivine. The colorful crystals around the largest are pyroxene, gray and yellow striped minerals are plagioclase, and black patches are iron-titanium oxides. The lava flow was erupted about 3.5 billion years ago and covers part of the floor of Mare Cognitum, a large asteroid impact basin.

This photo was taken in cross polarized light. The bright colors are a light interference effect. The natural colors for the minerals are: olivine, colorless; pyroxene, purplish-brown; plagioclase, colorless; iron-titanium oxides, black. The width of the area photographed is 8 mm. The specimen is a thin section, a thin slice of the rock 30 microns thick.
